Congratulations on the birth of !

You might want to give the saw a try. We had all of our daughter's casts

sawed off without any crying. At first we'd block her ears but even after we

stopped doing that it still never bothered her. If it doesn't work you can

always go back to soaking.

Congrats on your new addition. We had to remove one cast at home as well. I

heard shooting vinegar water down through the inside of the cast with a

turkey baster works well to get the cast off in a reasonable amount of time.

After the first one we opted the rest to be sawed off. They sawed them off

in less than 60 seconds, it was beautiful.

We see Dr.Colburn with Kaiser in Pleasanton. Is that who you see??? Just

curious!

Hi -

Congrats on your new addition. We had to remove one cast at home as well. I

heard shooting vinegar water down through the inside of the cast with a

turkey baster works well to get the cast off in a reasonable amount of time.

After the first one we opted the rest to be sawed off. They sawed them off

in less than 60 seconds, it was beautiful.

We see Dr.Colburn with Kaiser in Pleasanton. Is that who you see??? Just

curious!

far. We did a lot of plaster cast removals at home before we

switched to the Ponseti Method. (once we switched, they were soaked

off at the hospital and their cast technicians cut the casts off)

We would do a pre-soak by putting warm washclothes that were soaked

in vinegar directly wrapped on the cast, and then a plastic bag over

the top with some rubberbands to keep it in place. Then we used the

sink full of warm water and vinegar for the major soak. We used a

heavy duty cutters, scissors and knives to get it off- we were never

able to successfully *unwrap* the cast even though they left us

a " knob " . We found that the knob was always the thickest part of the

cast and didn't soften up as well as the rest and we'd end up cutting

around it. I've read tips (after we were done w/ the cast removal

stage) about scoring the cast first to help with the breakdown- that

seems to be a very good idea. I also read someone used a turkey

baster to put the water down inside the cast, but we never had a

problem with the layers closest to the skin once we got the outside

softened up.

The vinegar works well- we called it " pickling the baby " because it

smelled so bad...but the scent never stays on the skin- so once

you're done, it's okay.

Hope this helps some. What doctor are you seeing? Most doctors

prefer to remove the cast at the hospital so that the child is not

without a cast for very long. Hope you'll stay with us and keep us

posted on your son's progress!

Thank you very much for the information. It seems as though vinegar

is the key to shortening the time of soaking! The first time was very

difficult, as we also had to take into consideration not getting his

umbilical cord wet. Which we did. And we also had him circumcised. So

soaking in the tub was totally out of the question. We soaked with

warm wet towels which seemed to do nothing. Then leaned him over a

tupperware bowl for 2 hours! I used small scissors, but daddy was so

nervous he jumped at every 1/8 inch that I cut!!!!

I think this week will be smoother. I just bought the fisher price 4

in 1 bath that has a removable sling insert (very soft). I'm hopeful

that he'll be able to lay comfortable enough to sleep through most of

the soaking time.

He sees Dr. Godley at Santa Kaiser here in San . He is

also the Chief of Orthopedic surgery. He's only been using the method

for about a year, but I feel very confident he knows what he's doing.

He doesn't like to use the saw on newborns, so that is why we are

taking it off. Which, although it is alot of work, I couldn't watch

it be sawed off!!! Too traumatic fo MOM!!!

I really look forward to being a member of this group. There is not a

lot of information on this method, or clubfoot in general. Plus there

is no better place than to hear it from experiences of all sorts!!!

Congratulations on your new addition. My daughter was born in

october with bilateral clubbed feet. She is now in the brace full

time. Oh i remember how hard it was soaking her with her cord on, it

was awful. We got it wet we just drenched it in alcohol afterward

and it was fine. We soaked her for 30 min. then my husband took

blunt wire cutters and cut it off, the whole process of soaking and

cutting took 45 min. I am so glad i found this site, i posted every

week of her cast removal and pictures of the process. It is amazing

how their feet change with every cast, the first cast removal

especially. Now her feet when they are out of the shoes are pretty

Congratulations on your new addition. My daughter was born in

october with bilateral clubbed feet. She is now in the brace full

time. Oh i remember how hard it was soaking her with her cord on, it

was awful. We got it wet we just drenched it in alcohol afterward

and it was fine. We soaked her for 30 min. then my husband took

blunt wire cutters and cut it off, the whole process of soaking and

cutting took 45 min. I am so glad i found this site, i posted every

week of her cast removal and pictures of the process. It is amazing

how their feet change with every cast, the first cast removal

especially. Now her feet when they are out of the shoes are pretty

straight. It is remarkable how they have changed. It is so well

Hi -

We've been seeing Dr. Colburn since August 30th. We live in San Diego and my

son saw a doctor down here for the casting and tenonomy, but then when it

came to the DBB the doctor down here was modifying Dr. Ponseti's method and

I was not comfortable with the modifications. So we switched to Dr. Colburn

because he came very highly recommended by this board and was on Dr.

Ponseti's preferred list of doctors using the Ponseti method. Dr. Colburn

works very closely with Dr. Ponseti and offered us an oppty to come to his

office on August 30th while Ponseti was in town, so we got to meet both of

them. After that we just felt that Dr. Colburn was a better doctor for our

son than our SD doctor so we switched to him and have been very happy.

You may want to check with Dr. Ponseti in regards to the doctor you are

seeing and make sure Dr. Ponseti approves of him. I found out the hard way

that just because they trained with Dr. Ponseti and use the method it isn't

always good enough. You really want to make sure you go to a doctor that

Ponseti approves. I would ask your doctor how many club feet patients he has

treated in the last year the Ponseti way and what has been his success rate.

The best of luck. You definatley found the right method (Ponseti), so just

make sure your doctor is the right doctor to preform it.
