No kidding ... Not many folks talk about it... cuz it's gross and personal.. and then when it doesn't work right, like it did before.. you don't know if something is wrong and you don't know how to talk about it....

Oh gosh.. I remember going for weeks without being able to poop.. bloated and hurting... not wanting to eat cuz it made me feel worse.. then dreading going cuz often times I was so impacted that I'd sit there for an hour trying to poop and when it finally came out I'd tear my bottom.....

You can chuckle.. but it's not funny.

Once my levels came up I was having an easier time going... less pain in going, going more often so less pain the rest of the time... I was getting pretty happy with going once or twice a week.

That's when I started working on what and how I was eating... You've all heard about mini meals.... 'cept for the new folks.. don't worry, you will, I talk about them alot.....

My first step was to increase fiber.... It kinda happened by accident... I ran across a recipe when I was searching for ways of using oatmeal. I found a recipe for banana oatmeal cake. Dad was on a banana kick and there was usually a banana or two that turned each week before he could polish them all off. I peeled them and stuck them in the freezer til I had enough for the recipe. I made it, as cupcakes and they were pretty good.... I let Dad and Ruth have one... and low and behold.. we had the same reaction... regularity in the potty.... Just one regular sized cupcake a day was all it took to have a happy poop the next morning...

I shared them in group and they got renamed Topper's Potty Cupcakes.

I still make them.. but not as often..... I just made a batch last week, and experimental version that had a chocolate twist... they were VERY tasty.... and did the job.... Job... get it!!!??? hhehehehehehe

So.. from that start I got busy... How many ways can you use oatmeal, if you don't like eating it as hot cereal?

I ground it and used it as a breading on meats.

I ground it and used it as a topping for baked fish, replacing soda crackers.

I added it as the extender in meatloaf, meat balls, and salisbury steak instead of bread crumbs and bread cubes.

I sprinkled the ground oatmeal in with the flour when making pan gravy.... it adds a 'nutty' taste to it other wise there is nothing changed... except gravy is now a source of fiber.

I found a recipe for brownies that had a oatmeal layer on the bottom, at least now when I eat a brownie it also has fiber.

I make a snack cake, chocolate, lemon, orange, or vanilla flavors. I started adding oatmeal to the top, like you'd sprinkle nuts on top of a cake.....

Get the idea? Start thinking of ways of sneaking stuff into your meals, as often as you can, so you get bit of it all the time... and the result.....

Every morning... happy potty times!

Well.. that's enough about poop, for now! hehehehehehe

It does make you feel good when you know you're not the only one...misery loves company or something like that, but I always took that phrase negatively, and now, I rather see the point of it. Constipation is definitely a sign of hypothyroid, I didn't even know it wasn't normal until I started taking Synthroid, and all once, was going more than once a day, not constipated, just normal, and I was like WOW and then it normalized to once a day, and I must say, it's so nice to go to the bathroom and actually GO. LOL!!! Ask Topper for her cupcake recipe or whatever that was, it was posted recently and said something about it helping with that. I was also taking naps, at least one a day, until just this last week, and now I'm all at once able to stay awake all day and not feel like falling over, so that's a good thing, and it is letting me know I'm at least getting on the right track to being better. What meds are you on, if any? Lab results?

Oh no, I'm not chuckling, I know exactly what you mean about it cutting your bottom. Ugh, it was awful!!

I don't even peel my bananas when they turn, I just shove them in freezer, peeling and all, unless the peeling has a tear in it, I've found it protects from freezer burn better than any other method. I save them up and make banana nut bread (and that does make you go, I put about twice the bananas in it that recipe calls for because I like it nice and moist).

I already use oatmeal in most of the ways you listed (though haven't tried breading things with it, that sounds neat) but my mom always used it in her meatloaf/balls, adds it to cakes, sprinkles granola on ice cream, puts it in her dry cereal (like just a little in with corn flakes and slice up a banana in that as well, and that's yummy, also works with rice krispies). I will have to try the gravy thing, that sounds like it would be good.

Thing is, though, that I develped good eating habits because of the way mom cooked; I love greens and beans and corn bread, and usually make that about once a week because my hubby loves it too, good ol' down home cookin' is what we call it LOL. And I eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies, and when I don't have the ability to keep the fresh ones, I eat the canned but only the fruits in their own juice (not the syrup, yuck) and I buy frozen veggies instead of canned when I can, too, though we do eat our fair share of canned veggies, as well. But even with all that, and making sure to balance out my meals, I was still being constipated and it was puzzling, but I never gave it that much thought, until after starting meds and all at once, I was going, and I was thrilled! LOL!

Speaking of food...it's time to make dinner. Maybe I'll do the greens tonight, that sounds good, actually.

As one who had diarrhea for a year and a half which was first

stopped with a prescription med but hasn't returned since the

surgery, but note I'm not on replacement hormone yet. But I have

read quite a bit about bowel health and the importance of food

staying in the bowel long enough for the nutrition to be absorbed in

the body. So if it stays there longer, it isn't a matter of the

body squeezing every last drop of nutrition out of it, but it

becomes toxic ? How is that ? Note - I do realize going a week

without pooping indicates something wrong.

What I found most interesting in what I read, (and btw the

psychatrist I see recommended the book having put herself on it's

recommended yes and no foods and lost a couple of her allergies, she

says when the usual medical science isn't working for some patients

she tries to learn and look into other resources)is the cycle of low

immune system and diseases and usual med science treatment that only

leads to the same less efficient bowel health. The idea being that

food has to stay in the intestines long enough to absorb nutrients

and if it doesn't, then this illness cycle goes on - treat the

illness, continues less efficient bowels, low immune system,

illness, treat the illness, continues less efficient bowels. The

book stressed the importance of staying away from antibiotics as

much as possible and that includes dairy and meat in which the

animal systematically is treated with antibiotics. I regularly take

acidophilus, not just yogurt, but live culture, and the same that

has more flora that is naturally found in the bowels. Since I

figure I do ingest stuff that has bad stuff in it that makes for

less efficient bowels. Once my diarrhea stopped, I could sense how

stronger I felt. BTW diarrhea is probably a symptom of thyroid

doing hyper even tho levels came back as normal and family doc is

who mentioned that to me. We're keeping an eye on that for when my

replacement hormone starts. If diarrhea returns I have a

colonoscopy. joy. That's a great motivator to do all that can be

done to eliminate diarrhea. ( :

> OMG, darn right, it's not funny! Anyone who has even been one

week without pooping is already becoming toxic, and they will be

sicker than with the flu, if it goes on and on. Our sewage system

gets backed up, we're going to be poisoned, being as that is

eventually absorbed back into the body. This is why I like my AIM

Herbal Fiber Blend. It's not the only one out there, but it works

to sweep everything out, so I'm sticking with that. Right now, I'm

going to run out, so I'm reordering right after Christmas, or maybe

before Christmas, with all that good holiday food? It has saved me

during hypo times, when it just wouldn't happen on it's own volition.
