After getting advice from people in this group, we started using tetralax plus

and prilosec for reflux. Tetralax Plus is an over-the-counter, tums like thing

that is sugar/carb free. We crush it and put it in water when Langan seems to

be suffering from reflux, and within 10-15 minutes she is a happy camper. She

is 19 months old and we use 1 pill as needed (which is sometimes every 3 hours

overnight). Our pediatrician ok'd that amount. He also prescribed prilosec.

She has been on it about 10 days now and we are finally seeing some results. We

have not used the tetralax in a few days now and Langan is MUCH happier and not

spitting up. It is capsules. We open them and sprinkle the insides on her

food.

Good luck! You are right not to give up on the diet. Congrats on the success

so far!

HELP! problems with reflux

Hi,

My daughter, , has been on the diet since 12/16/03 and was doing well

until a few weeks ago. She began throwing up 1-2 times per day. After

several

visits to pediatrician, ER, and calls to the dietician we finally came up

with reflux. Now she's been put on Reglan and Zantac, which helped a little

(still vomiting seveal times per week), but the sugar and carbs in the meds

lowered

her ketones to 80. Now we've been put on a pill form of Reglan and she's

back to vomiting several times a day.

Does anyone have any ideas on what to do? I'm not getting much support from

her dietician (takes weeks for her to get back to me). I'm not ready to quit

the diet as other than this problem she's been able to get off 2 meds and

greatly reduce her seizures.

I was thinking about looking into some alternative meds, like homeopathy,

etc. Has anyone had any experience with this?

Thanks!

Heidi, future occupational therapist and single mom to (IS,

Severely/Multiply Impaired) and (4 year old twins), and big sis Madison

(almost

6!).

Heidi,

Usually vomiting is due to all the fat in the diet. It can take some

time to adapt to that. But it can also be a sign of ketones being too

high so that has to be considered as well. It can also be caused by

dehydration and is a vicious spiral with vomiting, dehydration and

vomiting, so watch fluids closely.

If it is reflux, which we had big time, I use milk of magnesia, small

meals more often, keep elevated after meals for 1/2 hour to 1 hour, give

small amounts of soda water at the end of the meal and after the meal,

raise the head of the bed 4 to 6 inches.

Heidi--

Personally, I would steer clear of Reglan like the plague. It is known to have

CNS side effects in 30% of pediatrics, which is NOT a good thing for our kids

who are already dealing with CNS issues! For reflux control, we use Nexium

daily (the generic Prilosec just isn't the same as the good old rx, no matter

what the manufacturers try to claim) and Titralac Plus when needed (which is

practically never nowadays).

Heidi,

Have you researched the archives on this topic covering the past 2 years?

This problem has been addressed in depth some time in the past. It may

prove to be helpful. The first thing that comes to my mind is that your

daughter's body may be rejecting having higher ketones. Did she seem to do

better when the ketones were down to 80? Were her seizures worse at 80?

I'm really wondering if her reflux improved due to the Reglan and Zantac

lowering her ketones. If I were in your situation I would try to lower the

ketones and see if she improved especially if her seizure activity did not

get worse. Another thing to consider is giving her digestive enzymes. Our

daughter had a similar problem without the vomiting. We tried Zantac and it

did not improve. We tried digestive enzymes right before each meal and she

got immediate improvement. The digestive enzymes helped break down her food

better.
