What melatonin do you order from Kirkman? Do you count the carbs? Everything I

saw had sorbitol and some other " ols " in them. Is that ok?

Thanks! Sorry for so many questions!

RE: Sleep Help/ Melatonin/

We gave Shan Melatonin and it worked wonders on her. It was taking her a

couple hours to drop off into a deep sleep and she would have 15-20 seizures

just trying to fall asleep. We gave her melatonin 1-2 hours before going to

bed and she had no problems going to sleep. Her seizures reduced to about 1

when falling asleep. If I remember right she still had a seizure about

every 4 hours while sleeping but her sleep improved tremendously. I'm

guessing that her body was not naturally producing enough melatonin as the

sun went down in preparation for sleep. After about a year of being on

melatonin we actually were able to quit it and she continued to be able to

fall asleep easily. Her seizures were much more controlled too. It's a

great natural way of helping a child to get better rest especially during

the difficult times of drug weaning.

Over the past month we have noticed that Shan is not falling asleep as

easily. Her nights have been more restless and she has had a few more

seizures than usual. It's hard to get pure melatonin here in Australia so I

have ordered it from Kirkman Labs there in the U.S. and it will be arriving

next week. While I'm waiting for the melatonin, we have opted to try a

herb called Valerian. I'm curious if anyone has tried it here on the list.

I did some internet research on it and could not find anything bad. There

are no long term use studies. It is likened to valium except that it is not

addictive and does not have the side effects. If too high of dose is taken

a person could feel sleepy the next day or a person could experience

headaches or possible nightmares. Only serious problems reported were

after a person took at least 10 times more than the recommended amount. For

the past 4 nights I've been giving Shan half the dose recommended for an

adult. Once again she is yawning and going to sleep fairly quickly.

Curiously, in my research it said that in the 1700-1800's it was used for

seizures. One person claimed to have been cured of epilepsy after taking

Valerian. Today it is recommended for sleep and anxiety.

I ordered the melatonin Plus 1mg capsules. They list for ingredients

magnesium and melatonin. I will not count any carbs for them. You could

give Langan half of the capsule or even a little less than half. Any tablet

you find you will probably have to cut it in half or 1/4ths. In the past I

did give Shan melatonin made by GNC which contained rice powder. After

talking with the GNC company I found out that the minimal rice powder is

only a derivative of rice without any carbs. I did not count any carbs for

it. The only reason I went with Kirkman Labs is because I had to order over

the internet and I'm aware of their reputation for making hypoallergenic

medications. I have also ordered other products from them. When I saw that

they carried a no carb melatonin that's hypoallergenic, I did not hesitate

to order. If I was in the U.S. right now I probably would have gone to the

local health store and began reading all the labels. In the past I tried

having my mother do that but everything she found had extras in it.
