Guest guest
How does one determine phenol/sal sensitivity? Is there any definitive testing? I ask because my NT daughter is quite highstrung/sensitive/irritable. Sometimes she says she realizes the way she is acting but has no control over it. This has been going on forever with good/bad periods. Would love to explore the possibility of phenol/sal sensitivity. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Guest guest
Phenol/salicylate sensitivity is shown mostly through behavior. Sometimes kids will have red ears/cheeks, dark circles under the eyes, eczema....but those symptoms are seen less often then the behavioral ones. Behavioral symptoms can include hyperactivity, aggressiveness, crankiness, attention problems and/ or weepiness. Obviously these need to be seen on a consistent basis since all kids act like this sometimes! There are no tests for this kind of allergy, the only way to see if that is what is causing the behavior is to remove the high sal. foods and see if it improves. In Feingold this is done for a minimum of 6 weeks before reintroducing any high level foods. Because different fruits/veggies contain different levels, sometimes a person can tolerate one food but not another. Check out these websites http://www.danasview.net/phenol.htm http://users.bigpond.net.au/allergydietitian/fi/salicylates-list.html Good luck!
