Elaine always praises the late Dr. Atkins for his research and pioneering

caution with carbs, however, she is quick to say SCD is nothing like it.

Here is the difference:

Atkins limits the AMOUNT OF CARBOHYDRATES- 20 grams on the induction phase and

80-100 grams daily after.

SCD restricts THE TYPE OF CARBOHYDRATES- to monosaccharides only, and does not

allow dissaccharides.

Atkins Diet is for weight loss.

The Atkins diet induces ketosis something that is very unhealthy for our

autism kids.

SCD heals the damaged gut and improves the gut/brain connection in autistic

children.

(A ketogenic diet may be useful for seizure children though).

Well, you could SAY that I guess for simplicity sake when dealing with other

people, but if you do you might get a bunch of OH you have to try this such and

such that is low carb and blah blah... it's frustrating because they don't get

it when you say it's not allowed on the diet.

I just say my kids are on a starch free/sugar free diet because of a digestive

disorder. But that's me. :)

I say something very similar. I tell people they are on a grain

free, starch free, sugar free diet because of food allergies.

People take the words " food allergy " very seriously and don't

really ask more detailed questions.

If I find someone is actually interested in the " whys " of the diet,

then I explain it in more detail.

Robbie, you can express it quite simply so I am repeating:

Atkins is about the amount of carbs allowed. It is a weight control diet.

SCD is about the kind of carbs allowed and also does not limit them. It is for

healing and not weight control.

It is not a low carb diet. You could say it's about Smart Carbs, selective

ones.
