Guest guest
Hi, I have requested a new IEP meeting for my daughter who is in second grade. I would like to hear from anyone who has an older child with a cochlear implant regarding the communication methods used by your child at school. Do they use sign, verbal/oral language or what? Do they use a sign interpreter or another type of interpreter? I am trying to figure out what is best for . She is currently using a sign interpreter. She receives speech therapy and " resource " help for math and reading comprehension. I am not sure what to say to ask for what we want and am looking for ideas. She doesn't have a huge sign vocabulary but she also doesn't yet understand everything you tell her. She is an extremely verbal child in that she will talk to anyone and enjoys talking. She just doesn't always make sense! She talks well but has some gaps.At the beginning of the year we requested that the interpreter not sign everything to her, such as things she is already familiar with but it wasn't written into the IEP so I want to change that, though it may just be words on a paper. I was in the room the other day and they were signing the pledge of allegiance to her which she knows quite well.It is very frustrating at times! is very bright and I don't think they give her enough credit or have high enough expectations for her. Anyway, I would appreciate some insight. Thank you, - mom to 7, CI, and Kathleen 6.
