Hi Ally :) I was initially dx'd with a BU during an U/S during my 1st

pregnancy, then had it confirmed in between pregnancies with an HSG (can't

spell the full name, but it's where they shoot your uterus full of some sort

of dye and do an x-ray to view it's shape).

However, the radiologist had recommended an MRI to determine if I was also

septate - which my doctor never passed on to me, so we never knew about the

septum until my current pregnancy when we could see it on u/s. So my

understanding is that you need an MRI to really see a septum properly,

although I'm sure the many ladies who've had resections can tell you more

about it :)

You're right, it's the septum that causes early m/c, not the bicornate

shape, which basically increases your risk of pre-term labor/birth and the

need for a c-section...

good luck!

Ally,

Sorry to hear about all the stress you are under currently. The

best advice I can give is to get a second, and possibly a third

opinion. The tests that they run are not always acurate, nor are

the techs who read them. One thing to ask your doctor is if he/she

have actually reviewed the films, and not just the reports from the

techs. I was diagnosed with a UU during the HSG, the either SU/BU,

but the doctor believed it was SU from the MRI. The LAP/Hyst to

remove the septum showed an UU. I should have gotten a second

opinion the first time but did not. AFter the surgery I found out

my doctor never looked at any of the films, just the reports on the

films. Needless to say, I do not see that doctor anymore.

Hope all goes well, and Good luck,

ttc 2 years.

Hi Ally,

I am not BU, but when my dr first discovered my uterus

wasn't " normal " , it was unclear as to whether I was UU, BU, or SU

(even after an hsg) - this was because of the way the septum filled

so much of my uterus. Lap/hyst is the " gold standard " for confirming

diagnosis, which is how I found out I was SU & my RE resected the

septum. (I never had an MRI, we just went right to the lap/hyst).

If your doctor can very clearly read the films from your MRI and IF

there is a dip in the outer contour of the top of the uterus (if from

the outside, it looks heart shaped), that will most likely confirm

that you have BU. If the outer top part of your uterus is flat, then

you would most likely have SU, and the two " sides " are merely formed

on the inside by the septum; there are not not two separate

structures as seen from the outside (BU). So, if the MRI is clear

and your doctor looks at the films him/herself (as someone else so

wisely suggested), and you feel comfortable with that, it's likely

you have a good diagnosis. However, if the films are not clear or

you'd just like to know for your own peace of mind, you can ask to be

scheduled for a lap/hyst. If it's BU, your RE will leave it alone,

but if it turns out to be SU, the septum can be resected right then &

there.

Hope that makes sense, and best wishes in getting a clear diagnosis!

It makes all the difference in knowing where to go from here.
