RE: Stopping the diet?

Hi Eva,

It’s hard to answer your question about if 5-6 months is long enough to try

the diet without knowing your circumstances. If your son is off medications

and you have tweaked the diet to the best of your ability with no changes

then I would say that probably it is time to come off the diet. You may

want to share with us the ratio and other details about what you are doing

with your son. Perhaps someone would have some other suggestions to try.

Lately members have written several different ways of weaning the diet. We

weaned down to a 1:1 by dropping the ratio by .2 every 2 weeks.

* Hello,

I've been a member for 7 or 8 months but I've hardly posted :-)

We've been on the diet for 5 months now. We committed to doing 6

months, which will be up at the end of Februaury. My son is having

the same number of seizures as before the diet. Is six months really

long enough to know if the diet works or should we keep at it longer?

Also, if we decide to stop in Februaury, how would we do it? Is it

the same weaning porocess as for kids who've been on it for years?

TIA

Eva

How supportive is your keto team? Have they tried manipulating the

diet (calories, ratio etc.)consistently to try to get better seizure

control? Is he still on medication? This could be a biggie. How old

is your son? Could he be sneaking forbidden foods?

Most important.... how do you feel about continuing? The diet is a

big committment for the whole family. If it works, it is absolutely

worth it. If you really think that you have tried (with good keto

team support) everything you can, I can believe that you might be

feeling very frustrated.

If your team is not supporting you, maybe you can post what you've

been doing and find help here. You might want to consider finding a

new keto center. It's a tough decision but " mom's instinct " will

lead you to do the best for your child.
