Guest guest
A diuretic COULD help but as you suggested I would want to know what is causing the problem. Try to relax until you have the answers you need and go from there. In the meantime here's a big <<<<<<<hug>>>>>>>> for you. Hang in there and come back and let us know what you find out. Guest guest
Nickie- Liver problems and peritoneal mets are just a couple of causes for abdominal distention. My surgeon told me that fluid leaking from peritoneal mets can wax and wane. Fluid can accumulate if fluid (blood or lymph fluid) cannot get back to the heart easily from a variety of causes. I had fluid in my abdomen for a while- despite having responded very well to chemo. Only just in the last month seems to be going away. My oncologist and I wondered if previous surgery and radiation had caused some scaring around vessels or lymph nodes and perhaps this is finally healing. If the abdomen gets really distended it can make it more difficult to take a deep breath. In general they don't like to drain fluid from the abdomen much because there is a lot of protien that is in it that is lost if it is removed. I had a friend however with liver tumors from breast cancer that had fluid removed to make her more comfortable when she accumulated a large amount. I hope things get better soon. Kris > Dear Friends, > > My Dad has started to experience excessive mucous (he spits out mucous very frequently especially during the mornings) and now his stomach appears to be bloated. His arms and legs are not bloated. His blood work and liver functions are normal. He has lungs mets and peritoneal mets. > > He is on his first cycle of Avastin/Xeloda (the next one is June 11). He does not have any side effects from this yet. > > I am checking with his Onc but just wanted to get everyone's thoughts as well. > > Is his stomach bloating coming from the excessive fluids in his lungs/pleural area or from his peritoneal mets? Can bloating cause digestive obstructions as well? Can he take lasix or other similiar drugs to reduce the bloating? > > I am so worried now that he is starting to show symptoms...he's lasted for 3 years without any symptoms. Your thoughts are greatly appeciated!! Hugs, Nickie >
Guest guest
There are several over-the-counter meds to help relieve gas symptoms.Look for something that contains simethicone as an ingredient.(Maalox Plus anti-gas;mylicon;gax-x;mylanta are just a few examples)Hubby prefers the maalox plus chewable tablets and they work quite well for him.He has a lot of gas buildup at times due to the size of his colon tumors that are very close to causing an obstruction.Changing positions and trying to move around a bit after meals helps too. And, of course, limiting the amount of gas-causing foods also helps,or eating small amounts more frequently instead of the usual 3 meals/day.There are some prescription drugs for relief of the gas buildup also that you can ask the doc about.Hubby tried a couple earlier but found they didn't help him any more if as much as the maalox plus so he just sticks with that.(it's much cheaper & he can use it whenever he needs) Hope this helps some and your Dad will find some relief.
