Hi I was wondering if others have both a fib and aflutter. I have

had a few episodes of a fib over the past 3 or 4 years where my pulse

is irregular and also fast.I am on sotalol(maximum dose and aspirin).

However I am constantly aware of fluttering. I put on my own monitor

and my heart skips beats and also has two or three quick beats

together about every 20 to 30 beats. Do others have this feeling all

the time as well and is it cause for concern?

*********************,

I also have afib/flutter. I am on Sotalol also but 80x2 plus Warfarin. I

have occasional pvc's but not a lot of the fluttering on the Sotalol. When I

was on a calcium channel blocker I had the flutters all the time and did not

keep track of them there were so many. I have been on the Sotalol about a month

and a half so far. On the days I get the flutters I usually take it easy that

day because they seem to come more when IM tired. If your getting more than

usual why not discuss it with your Doctor?

a in Massachusetts 49 NSR Sotalol 80x 2 Warfarin

Hi, ,

I think what you are describing is not what is called aflutter. My

understanding is that aflutter is a very rapid regular beat.

What you are describing may be ectopics or tiny runs of afib or tiny

runs of fast beats or a mixture of those. It is what my own pulse

feels like some of the time, and it drives me nuts when it is

prolonged.

A 24 hour monitor would tell you exactly what these things are. I

suggest it both for that and also because you may be actually in afib

some of the time, and the monitor would determine if that's the

case. If it is the case, you might have to consider coumadin.

You might want to talk to your doc about what is happening and also

consider if you need to be on a different med that might address

this. I am still trying to handle it with a beta blocker, which as I

understand it is the best med for suppressing ectopics and is safer

than anti-arrhythmic meds.

I think Solatol may have some beta blocker properties, but I am

guessing it may not be as effective that way as a " real " beta blocker.

There's a difference between short runs of ectopic activity and atrial

flutter, have you had Atrial flutter diagnosed with an ECG?

'fluttering' as a description of what wee feel and atrial flutter are

two distinct things - I think it's important not to confuse the two.

but in answer to your question -yes some people do have both atrial

flutter and atrial fibrillation people - often one progresses to the

other.

and yes some people have runs of ectopics along with their AF - which

can be most annoying.

you should mention it to your doctor, if they happen often enough he'll

probably order a holter monitor test or similar to try to get a more

accurate view of what is going on.
