Any suggestions? I work during the day and am call most of the time. I travel several times a year (fly.) I don't want to get a pet and then ignore it. I know that I have seen pets (a small dog) on a flight. I have had it on my mind a lot lately. I thought it would give me something to come home to, you know company.

Ren,

Pets can be very theraputic. If you are up to taking care of one I would get one.

What is your opinion on having a pet. I live alone and thought getting a small indoor dog would be company to me. What are your thoughts? ren

I breed cats and dogs and have no intention of not doing so. I can think of no reason why you shouldn't have pets. In fact, there are many good things about them.Patty

It all depends if you get a puppy. If you get a puppy remember you will need to potty train it. Once the dog is potty trained, outside of feeding and giving it some attention thats pretty much it.

I am up to taking care of one, I am very busy at work and in the community. How much time does it take to care for a small inside dog? ren

Dogs can be great company. If you can't take it with you when you are gone there are places that will board them for you but be sure that they have a good reputation or sometimes you can find a private individual that will dog sit.

I work all day as well. I felt bed leaving her home all day by herself at first, but they get used to it. And they are SOOOO happy when you come home and I know I get to the point towards the end of every day where I just cant wait to see her and miss her so much. I dont know what I would do without her. If its too much to take her/him with you when you travel, they have some wonderful kennels you could put her in. They have one here that is like a resort for dogs. They have living rooms, bedrooms, spas and outdoor activities. It also gives them a chamce to interact with other dogs. Dont hesittae. It will do both you and the doggy so much good. You'll see!! Good luck and keep us posted, please! :)

The first couple months is the hardest. Just to train them and get them on a routine to go pee and poop. After that, its just a matter of taking them outside a couple times. Mine is an indoor dog. We go for a walk when I get home from work and thats pretty much it. We play inside. She has a ball I will throw for her a few times and then shes pooped out. lol. Not much maintenance once theyre trained. rendurall@... wrote:

I am a strong advocate for animals and I'd like to share my viewpoint with this group re pets. I speak for the animals point of view - so if I offend anyone, please consider that my opinions reflect my devotion to them.

A pet is a wonderful companion for anyone - but they have serious needs of their own. Despite how "well behaved" or low maintenance a dog may be, this is almost never the case in the beginning when the dog is a puppy and/or new to your environment.

Puppies require great patience to learn proper bathroom etiquette. You must be able to take the dog out many, many, many times a day in order to train them to "go" outside. Most puppies are full of life and energy and require someone to play with them. Dogs are taught to be loving, people friendly pets, by their frequent interaction with people. They need to be held and petted and spoken to.

If your lifestyle requires you to travel - and/or to be away from home all day - your dog will be very lonely and unhappy. The purpose of having a pet is two-fold: one reason is the pleasure a pet will give you, BUT the other reason is to provide the pet with a good home.

A cat is a much better choice for someone who is away a lot. However, I strongly recommend that you get 2 kittens so they will have companionship when you are away. Cats don't need to be walked, litter training is very easy, watching 2 kitties frolic is great fun. When you close the door to your apartment as you leave for work, you'll have the security of knowing your kittens will have each other.

Do I have animals? Yes, of course! Right now we have 4 cats, all of whom came to us as strays. In the course of my almost 30 year marriage, we've had 3 dogs (deeply loved, all eventually died of "old" age), lizards, turtles, hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, a salamander, and more that I've probably forgotten. We taught our daughters to love animals - so whenever they brought a stray home, we found room for them.

Pets fill a wonderful need in us - we have to be sure we fill their needs, as well.

I just want to agree strongly with what Ann has said. I have 2 rescue greyhounds. They now do well if we leave them alone as they are indoor dogs. I could never walk them now due to surgery restrictions and am sometimes too tired to get up and meet their needs due to my exhaustion from chemo. My husband is retired and here all the time so company is not an issue. My sister has always been a cat person and has made them indoor cats and treated them as family members. They are great and sleep on the bed and nap with her and seek out her company. If she and her husband go away for a couple of days, they have someone check on the cats, clean the litter box etc. I adore dogs but they do require a lot from us so they can have a happy life.
