There seems to be such variation in cardiologist's advice between UK and

USA...it amazes me all the time.

My cardiologist told me not to wait longer than 30 minutes in Afib before

going to the hospital.

After what i had been reading on the post on this group, i showed surprise

and asked him '''30 minutes??!''' to make sure I had heard that correctly and he

confirmed it.

I realise this goes against what a lot are doing on this list , and

seemingly happily so, and the time allows self conversion.

Haze,

I kept putting off a trip to ER a couple of weeks ago because of what

I had read on the board about waiting. I finally was urged to go see

a doctor by a few posters on another board and low and behold, I had

a lung infection which could have turned into pneumonia if I had

waited much longer.

I think it should be stressed that if you are concerned, you should

go get medical attention. Especially, newbies who aren't used to

dealing with afib yet, or those not taking anti coagulants.

The longer one is in afib the more difficult it is to convert. Some of us, me

not included, become dibilitated while in afib. There is a risk of stroke as

a result of afib, particularly if one is not taking an anticoagulant.

Did your Dr. state the reason he/she wants you to go to the ER within 30min?

Hi Guy:)

No he didnt say.. I will ask him next visit, in a few weeks, as I'm now

curious myself. Maybe in my case, it would be because at that time he wasnt

intending putting me on an anticoagulant, and I am allergic to aspirin so that

wasnt

an option, (though one he considered) so being at the hospital promptly he

maybe considered more important as Im at a higher risk of stroke than someone on

warfarin/coumadin.
