My take down was Sept 10, 2001 and I still have to watch

what I eat. They told me that the tendency to diarrhea would

lessen in time and it has. Raw fruits and veggies and dairy foods

and spicy foods and carbonated beverages are a few of the

compromises I have made to stay out of the bathroom. There are

times that I get a little brave and Just Do It anyway, like Mexican

food or Spaghetti, but I seldom get by with it so I try to eat

very small portions of whatever I have and then hope for the best.

Immodium has become something that I take if I plan on eating

out with friends or family, but that alone won't stop the

inevitable from beginning. I keep the anti-spas Rx close by too.

My colorectal surgeon wants to reinstall the colostomy. I am

putting that off as long as possible but realize that it will have

to happen at some point. Radiation and surgery and chemo

left their mark on my colon but it also saved my life. No regrets

here. I can handle smaller portions and stay with a

" Heart Smart " type of eating habit 75% of the time.

Sometimes a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do, so when my

family & friends see me eating chocolate pie or ice cream, etc,

they know not to invite me to go shopping the next day. I'll

be staying real close to the house on a short leach to the potty.

I've still got a little bit of " rebel " in me. <bg>

Take care,

Louise

Hi everyone -

I'm back after a long hiatus to ask a question to those folks who

have completed their surgeries and therapies. First a little

background info, my husband was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal

cancer. He had the tumor removed, a temperary ileostomy, 7 chemo

rounds (5fu and leukavorin sp), concurrent radiation therapy (28

days), an ileostomy take down, and a C.diff. infection. He's had

great (clear) blood work and scans for the past year and a half.

Anyway, he still needs to take imodium (or tincture of opium) with

every meal or else he would be living on the toilet. He also has to

watch what he eats or he'll pay for it. Also, he can't gain his

weight back. We have a friend who went through a similar treatment

course 12 years ago and he has similar ongoing side effects. I think

it is radiation enteritis as the symptoms and the culprit foods

coincide with their side effects, but the drs (both my husband's and

our friend's) say that nothing that they did would cause this long

term side effect.

Does anyone have experience with this long term side effect? How do

you deal with it? Has it been diagnosed?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I've been on the list for

over a month now, have

had 1 false alarm

call, and continue to wait.

Hi ,

So happy to hear you

finally got listed! Must be pretty close

to the top if you’ve had a false alarm.

Do you have someone who will keep us informed on your progress?

Hi Barb, I am actually a meld score of 9, and the

hospital generally transplants at 14-22.

I heard about another transplantee who got their liver

from U of M in Michigan after 30 days being listed as

well.
