Dale,

I was not going to add any fuel to this discussion but I truly think your

words were very wise tonight. Just wanted to let you know.

Some thoughts about subjects for the list

Subject: Some thoughts about subjects for the list

You all know how shy I am ;-) but I would like to put out a few thoughts

about what should and shouldn't go on the list.

First let me say I have used and been in computers for many years, I

have

been on lists for over 20 and moderated a few. Here are a few rules

that

have worked well over the years...

Two things that should not be discussed " usually " on lists are religion

and

politics, unless it is a list of said discussions. Why? Two

reasons... 1.

Either one can quickly take over the discussion on the list and

generate 10

times the messages that the real reason for the list does. 2. Either

of

these subjects usually polarize very quickly and many people cannot

argue

without getting mean and personal... For those two reasons, moderators

usually squash those discussions. We are already seeing a little name

calling starting to happen, please lets end this now before it goes any

further.

On our list there is even another reason, we are a support system, many

people are very emotionally fragile on the list, they don't want to

argue or

think about other problems. For many, this is a place of refuge, where

they

can come, forget the rest of the world and just talk with people who

understand them. By bringing this in, we are destroying that refuge

and we

get anger just from that, or worse yet, people drop off.

This not a free speech argument, it's just this is a support list for

people

with PLS. So if there is legislation that can affect PLS, by all

means, put

it on the list but that's about as far as it should go. If you want to

discuss these things go to the appropriate lists, there are tons out

there.

I have strong political and religious views but I doubt if any of you

could

tell from this list what they are.

My 2 cents, but I don't want to see this list torn apart...

well said, dale and thanks. but i doubt that any of the religious or

political posters will change their ways and try to be respectful of

others. I doubt they've even heard you, me, and others who would

rather not have these subjects here.

what truly saddens me about this problem is that " we " as PLSers suffer

indignities everyday and often unkindness from strangers or even

friends because of the way we talk or walk or fall....and this should

be the one place where we all can come and feel relaxed and not judged

and talk only of our common life struggles because of PLS.

I, too, am on a number of lists that have nothing to do with PLS and

at all of these lists one must adhere to the list rules of posting on

topic posts only or you will be removed from the list.

but, thanks for trying.
