Hi all. I just got back from the doctor and have some questions. First

thing, I don't think it is a good sign when the nurses have to drive you

home! Okay, from the beginning, I have been dealing with upper

respiratory infection and have been very nauseated and lightheaded for

the past many weeks. I know I am dehydrated and the doctor just keeps

telling me to drink, which is very hard to do with the nausea. I had an

upper GI on Monday and got the results today. I have a valve that is

working worse than usual. I knew that it didn't close all the way (valve

from esophagus to stomach), but now it is basically not closing and all

the acid is coming back up. This is causing the burning sensation, can

cause chronic cough, nausea, bronchitis, pneumonia, etc. I asked if it

could be causing some of the passing out episodes I have had recently and

he said it could as the acid could be hitting a nerve that slows down the

heart.

I am also dealing with needing to eat a lot, as I get lightheaded

and eating helps. Today while at the pharmacy, which is in the same

building as my doctor, I got real foggy, my muscles slowed down, very

hard to move arms and to talk, so the pharmacist took me back to Dr.

Banks. They checked vitals and all was OK. They checked blood sugar.

It was 71. This was at 12:15. I had eaten grapes and a muffin for

breakfast at 8:30. They said the number was okay. I think they wanted

to call my neuro, but can't as he is the one who was killed in the car

accident two weeks ago. They aren't real sure what is happening, as my

PCP is great, but not sure about mito. I am wondering if any of you have

these problems? I had to cancel tutoring again this afternoon, and that

is not like me at all. I don't like to let people down. I just know I

don't feel " right " . Sorry to complain, just wondered if anyone had

anything similar.

Smiles,

a

Have you tried eliminating milk products from your diet? I know that I am

lactose intolerant and have many of these symptoms when I am bad and have

something with milk. I get gallons of gas which puts pressure on many things

making my dysautonomis worse. My son gets the same kind of reaction from a

glucose and sucrose intolerance. He would become symptomatic with a muffin

and grapes. He also has problems when he over-extends himself.

I hope you get some answers.

Laurie,

I have tried eliminating milk products and that doesn't seem to

be the problem. Basically, right now they are trying to counteract the

acid coming up with medication. As for the dizziness and other things,

it could all be interacted with the acid. We will see. I know my doctor

will be working on this case.

Hi a. The only thing I can say is that I get light headed when I am dehydrated. Maybe that's what happened to you when you were at the pharmacy? I wish I had more info for you. Can the doc do anything about the valve? And don't worry, you're not complaining. I know it gets really frustrating to always have something going on as far as new symptoms. Feel better soon.

Celia,

I do try to eat when I get those symptoms. The doctor checked my blood sugar, as he also thought it might be to low. It was 71, which I guess was okay, but I hadn't eaten to long before the appointment. I do try to eat small meals more often, so it doesn't happen.

Thanks and smiles,

Dear a, Like you and lots of people here I too have gastroparesis which makes it hard for me to eat muchm feel nauseous ietc. It seems thoughm even if I eat more that usual, by around 2 oclock every afternoon- i go hypoglycemic. The only way I can avaiod it (and all the dizziness, weakness, shaking etc) is to eat around that time, even though I'n not hungry in the least, and head off the reaction. hope this is of some help, Celia--- In @yahoogroups

I can only help you some. If my blood sugar goes below 100 I start getting

light headed. If it gets around 71 like yours--I am shaking, and almost

passing out.

Have you tried carrying the peanut butter and fruit slices to eat when out

Hi a, I have had the problems with the acid and it caused incredible burning, nausea, coughing and occasional vomiting. I have been on Prevacid for a couple of years now because of it and it helps a lot. I have had the other problems you mention as a result of eating food high in carbohydrates. I would eat something like what you did and then a few minutes/hours later I get very weak, shaky, and faint. Everything around me seemed very unreal. I started to take my blood sugar readings on my own as I wasn't diagnosed with a sugar problem of any kind. I would watch my sugar go way up to 210 and then dip way down to 60 in a matter of a few minutes, or hours. Once I eliminated carbs from my diet as much as possible my blood sugar became more stable and balanced out. I stopped having those symptoms. Right now the only carbs I have been getting come from vegetables. I have not had any fruit, potatoes, bread, etc. Along with all of this came a reduction in the feeling that I needed to eat all of the time to get rid of the light headedness. I don't know if any of this is the same as what you are dealing with, but it sure seems similar. Hope you resolve the problems and feel better soon. Cheers,Ruth

Laurie,

I have also had the severe reflux for years and have been on medication for it for 7 years now. We have just come to the stumbling block where the valve is not working at all now to stop the acid. This can cause various problems and it has actually caused the recent bout of respiratory problems. We are searching into new medicines. He started me on Protonix today. I am sure it will help and I am glad your meds help.

Hi Ruth,

Thanks for the message. It does sound familiar. I have been on Prilosec, Previcid and Nexium, over the past seven years. I was started on Protonix today as the others are not helping now that the valve has stopped closing. The sugar problem sounds like mine. I can be high and then crash, but I have never been diagnosed with a sugar problem. My doctor did say I need to get more protein, which I do, but I can't eliminate carbs. I am one of the strange birds who does better with high carbs low protein. If I do the opposite, I can barely get out of bed.

Thanks and I am glad this works for you!

Too bad about peanut butter and other nuts. If you are going to have

crackers, you need protein with them or your blood sugar will drop again

real soon and possibly lower. How about the little packages of crackers and

cheese spread. I also keep the already fixed wheat crackers and cheese in

small packages.

It stands to reason that if we are energy deficient to begin with, that

low values for some are REALLY low values for us. We need a mito

glucose scale.

I agree with the person who suggested it may be the dehydration that is

causing the lightheadedness. Maybe you need to be hooked up to an iv for a

while each day for a few days? This could be done at home, with proper home

health type orders, so you could just do it at night, and for a while in the

afternoon say, until your valve starts doing better?

Another possibility is blood sugar. I know that if I just had a muffin and

grapes for breakfast, that much earlier in the day especially, I would be

feeling weak and shaky by the time you did! I have to eat fewer carbs, and

more protein or I get shaky way too frequently. give me a serving of plain

yogurt and protein powder mixed together, and I can last for hours, but

nothing but carbs, and I sink fast!

HUGS sounds like lately has been the real pits!

Ruth, I am not sure what all can be done. When the valve wasn't closing all the way, surgery was suggested, but the gastroenterologist said that he wouldn't recommend it, as it would be risky on me and it doesn't always work. So now, I am not sure where we will go from here. I guess we will just pray that the Protonix plus the antacids help! Thanks!
