Guest guest Posted November 14, 2004 Report Share Posted November 14, 2004 Hi everyone, Does anyone have any info on relationship to IGA and celiac disease or having allergy to gluten. My brother has chrohn's,his daughter is 3 yrs old and has colitis. another brother has asthma and his son has had dairy allergy since birth that he did outgrow at age 4. My mother states wheat bloats her and I notice I feel like my stomache relly gets bloated at end of day. I was wondering if anyone follows a gluten free diet and if so would it or could it slow progression of IGA. the article I read on IGAN CA site just said the relationship needs to be investigated. and do a lot of you have relatives with different immunologic problems. I have heard chrohns is caused by problems with immunoglobulin antibody. My half sister probably has IGA. she is 21 and has blood and protein in urine and did once pee blood.(that never happened to me).It sems like we all have different problems. no other family hx of IGA known. Guest guest Posted November 15, 2004 Report Share Posted November 15, 2004 Hi , I don't know of any epidemiological studies that have been done, but the incidence of celiac disease seems higher in IgAN and MPGN families than one would expect if the diseases were not related. The two cases of celiac disease that I know about are in otherwise healthy kids who have siblings with MPGN. Don't know about Chrohn's but as you pointed out, there is a general hodge-podge of immune disorders that are loosely associated with both IgAN and MPGN. In our family, my son has no other immune disorders, but his mother breaks out in severe hives at the drop of a hat and a grandmother with fibromyalagia. I know we do have a few members who have gone on gluten free diets, but I don't think the incidence of celiac disease seems to be any higher here than in the general population, and if there was a definite link, you would expect it to be higher. Guest guest Posted November 15, 2004 Report Share Posted November 15, 2004 There's only one thing to do. Go on a low gluten and/or low antigen diet and see what happens. We have at least one member who has done this. Due to the very nature of IgAN as it affects the kidneys, it can be hard to tell, because, you can go for so many years, decades even in relative stability, diet or not diet. I know, I went through that myself. The only thing peculiar about my " normal " diet throughout most of the 25 years I had this was that it tended to be naturally low protein. This was not because I consciouly tried to eat a low protein diet, but it was just the way I ate. I didn't actively follow any diet, except for the last year before dialysis, when they put me on a pre-esrd renal diet, and I mostly followed it. Keep in mind that for every member we have here who has problems with IgAN, there are probably a thousand non-members who don't and who just go through life living and eating normally.
