Guest guest
Hope they were able to give you something to help out with the pain and the rash. Barb I'm already taking liquid morphine for pain from the taxol so it can't get much stronger than that. (I'm guessing) The meds to control/get rid of the shingles is Famvir. I was flabbergasted when someone in the group said this was like herpes (IS herpes??) WHAT?????????????? I've never even had a cold sore EVER in my life...and now the time in my life when I'm having little or no sex... :-) I get HERPES???? bajeezie Louisie what gives? LOL My Onc never mentioned herpes. She said shingles is a sister to chicken pox. I think Ren or nne mentioned the awful pain with these things. And that day in particular, I thought hmmm... it's not that bad. My lower back aches and stings and the two sites with the rash had hurt some and every now and then I was getting a full leg like a hundred shooting pains and then it would subside. And I just thought to myself it isn't really too bad. Then, about 48 hours into it my back REALLY started hurting and my legs were shooting pains completely the whole leg, like needles on every inch of skin, not wavering for 6-7-8 hours and I was what I would consider "in massive pain." There just isn't any relief for several hours and then it dies down. This shingles pain is on top of the incredible joint pain the taxol is giving me. When I described the taxol pain to the Onc she prescribed the liquid morphine and also celebrex/anti-inflammatory. My knees, hips and ankles felt soooo swollen in pain. It started 2 days into my first taxol treatment. I never had a problem with arthritis or anything prior to the taxol. After taking the celebrex for a couple of days I found some relief with the joint pain. But, I was using a walker to get to the bathroom it had been hurting so bad even the morphine alone wasn't helping enough to walk without the walker. I've also been blowing groceries regularly with the taxol. So far none of the nausea meds have prevented it. I've been doing it so much that I'm no longer "afraid" of it. My entire life I have absolutely hated even the thought of throwing up and I'd do anything to prevent it. (no chance of being bullemic for me) :-) And now when I feel the feeling I pick-up the trash can and head to the bathroom and do my thing. My Onc's given me 5 or 6 different nausea meds and nothing has worked so far. This stuff just doesn't like me. She still doesn't want to take me off of it because she says it'd the most effective and I, too, want to try to stick it out so I can have the best chances of no recurrance. Anyway, I'm not having fun yet. I was so sick and in pain today that I had to lay around most of the day. I've got a party planned for Saturday night. (my daughter's 17th b-day) and I'm praying that I feel better tomorrow because my list of things to get done has doubled. eeeek! Looks like I'm being a bit windy tonight. Guest guest
Chicken pox is a herpes virus. If you ever had chicken pox it waits in your body and pounces out as Shingles. Which is herpes zoster. I can see you probably can't take anything else if you are on liquid morphine. But my breast cancer doctor was so interested in the Lidoderm patch (for BD pain) that he had me call the office with the exact name. Surprised me that he hadn't heard of it, but my regular doctor Rx'd it. Herpes is cold sores, herpes is shingles, herpes is chickenpox and on and on. So you don't have to have sex to get it. Believe me, at my age it's been a lot longer than any of you (since I had sex). Hugs and prayers for you Janet Hope your pain gets a lot better.
