That's really not good for the patient - maybe you should think about changing nephs. I have been on both Benicar and Lisinapril and they both worked. Benicar just protects potassium a little better than Lisinopril, but you can watch that pretty well. Hope things improve for you. Let us know how you are doing. We care. Benicar, Lisinopril... 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. One is an ACE inhibitor, the other an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). They both pretty much do the same thing when it comes to kidney disease, so, I'm not sure it matters much. Most doctors aren't too crazy about patients getting a different prescription from a different doctor when they are already treating them for the same problem, so maybe that's what he was saying. Blood pressure is really not something that should be treated on a measurement by measurement basis. Doctors need to see what a med does over a certain amount of time, irregardless of ups and downs which really happen all the time. Rather than changing (unless the patient is having obvious adverse effects), they really prefer adding, either a higher dose of the same drug, or a second drug. Lasix is very commonly the second drug in nephrology, simply because it's the nature of chronic renal insufficiency that there is a certain amount of fluid overload, and the BP just happens to be very sensitive to that. So, in that context, Lasix, a powerful loop diuretic usually handles that well. Usually, when it comes to diuretics, it's hydrochlorothiazide (or an equivalent thiazide drug) if you have more than 50% kidney function, and Lasix (furosemide) when you have less than 50%, but that's not written in stone. It's must that the thiazide diuretics may not be effective enough at some point, while Lasix is. When you're talking ACE inhibitors or ARBs, what specific one you take doesn't really matter very much. One reason for not getting on the BP med merri-go-round, and I've been there myself in years past, is that BP meds need to get to a steady state in your body, and your body has to get used to them. Go back and tell my Neph to put me back on Lisiopril? Since I have been on Benicar, it has totally helped my blood pressure. I have told him over and over (sound like a broken record) That I wasn't feeling good, while I was on Lisiopril and he didn't not listen to me. I was very frustrated and was tired of getting headaches. That is when I went to my PCP. So when PCP put me on Benicar, I was feeling much better. Still having headaches, but not nearly as bad and as strong. Plus, my blood pressure has been stable. I understand, Pierre. I am still learning. Thank you.
