Guest guest
Hi everyone, I haven't ever posted here. I got some test results today and I haven't been able to get in touch with my doctor yet. I have a couple of numbers that are out of range on my labs and I wanted to know if anyone knows what these might mean. My glucose is 128 and my BUN is 7. I looked back on the last couple of months of test results and my glucose has been getting higher and my BUN has been getting lower. Is this good? Is this bad? Thank you for any help you can get. Guest guest
Hi , Welcome to the group! I am glad you posted. I hope you will gain a wealth of knowledge, and lots of support here. On your BUN, lower is better. Normal values are 7-25 You are in trouble with your kidney function when BUN goes lots higher. On glucose a normal value is 65-115, and if it goes lots higher, the concern is diabetes. Here is a link for a Colorado Health site that has information on normal lab values: http://www.coloradohealthsite.org/dialysis/bc/bc1.htm Hope that helps, and welcome again. Guest guest
Hi , Welcome to the site! I'm so glad you posted. I hope you find this site as useful as I have. Generally, it's hard to look at labs without knowing more about you (height, weight, age) and how your labs have been trending. BUN reflects the amount of waste (urea) that is circulating in your blood. As kidney function declines, BUN goes up because you have more junk in your blood that is not getting filtered out. Thus, BUN going down is generally a good thing. Glucose at 128 is high, but I'm reluctant to comment without knowing more about you. Guest guest
By the way, BUN (or simply Urea) is the single most variable number in your lab report. It varies a lot just from simple eating, hydration, independent of actual kidney function. It's a number that needs to be interpreted as part of a whole. Of course, the more loss of renal function progresses, the more urea rises. If you go to our Yahoo Group home page (not www.igan.ca in this case), and then into the Files section, look for a folder named " Lab Results " . There's lots of good info in there, including one that I wrote up for BUN. Pierre
