Guest guest
Angie, An upper gi is a barium study performed by a radiologist where you drink barium and they watch it at it goes through your esophagus into your stomach and then the small intestine. An endoscopy is performed by a gastroenterologist where they put you to sleep with medications and insert a tube into your throat which then goes down through your esophsagus, stomach, and beginning of the small intestine. An upper gi requires a prep of being without foods overnight or a few hours. It is non-invasive, requires no meds, and uses radiation. An endoscopy is usually performed after an overnight fast. Biopsies can be performed through the scope. Hope this helps. Randy Re: Silly question - Angie ArleneNo I think it has been MY brain fog.... they're doing the endoscopytoday, but I thought that was the same as an upper GI... what is thedifference? They're inserting a tube through mouth, looking at upperintensinal area this afternoon, is that endoscopy or upper GI? Sorry, but ate wheat toast this a.m. and it has hit brain big time today.Angie> Ok coming up on the can not eat or drink until after the upper GI this> afternoon, more worried about being thirsty (chugging coffee here hehe)> Is it safe to chew gum? > Thanks> Angie> > > > > > > >
