Sorry if anyone in URU reads this and wonders why I haven't told them

personally but I have spent the last three days ringing everyone and

have got to the blanket emailing point.

No I am not pregnant and this is a sore point which no doubt I will go

into another time.

But DH is going away in 10 days to spend 4.5 months in the Falkland

Islands, which means that I don't have to go back to work in January.

Hooray cos Emma is at school full time and I may, just may, catch up on

all that NCT work.

(And now for the good bit) He is coming back in April, having 3 weeks

leave and then leaving for Cyprus for three years. We will move out to

join him in the school holidays once I have organised the shipping of

all our worldly goods and rented the house and bought a Tax Free car.

Yahoooo - we've only been working on this for about 3 years and now its

come off. Can't say I'm scared cos I spent a summer in Corfu in my dim

and distant youth, but I am very excited at the thought of 3 years in

the sun.

I intend to carry on my BFC stuff and stay on egroups so you won't miss

much of me. After all I cannot abandon the NCT, I will need it when I

come back. Akrotiri branch here I come!

No he is a Met Man (weather forecaster) but works for the RAF. and is

officially officer status, so I am expecting a huge house and managed gardens -

but

they keep mentioning the 'air of decaying decadence' which doesn't sound so

good! I will only go nom ail for as long as it takes to pack up the

pooter, send it, fly there, get the pooter out of storage, and set it up. If I

had my way it would be about 5 mins but I bet its nearer 3 weeks! Won't be

til the summer - I don't think arriving in mid August is too good an idea.

Anyway the baby is coming downstairs so I had better head her off at the pass...

Fantastic!

Sorry to hear about the non-pregnancy. Will living under the same roof

for three years constantly likely lead to more chances?

Now that sounds like good news!

I think I could live in Cyprus for 3 years. All sun and afternoon

Weeellllll....

We went to the Fertility Clinic yesterday and saw a different doctor to the

one we have been seeing. I think they have done a rotation again. After

not being able to find our semen analysis and HSG results, (and being

accused of not attended the tests!) she eventually got the results and

everything is fine. So my tubes are patent, my hormones are fine and DHs

swimmers are all present and swimming in the right direction! She agreed I

was ovulating on my own so all excellent news. Except that I still have

unexplained fertility.

So apart from offering me Clomid to stimulate ovulation (which I don't have

a problem with) she threw in a double whammy. Said I should consider

reducing my weight as this will increase my chance of spontaneous ovulation

(!) and reduce my chance of miscarriage.

Well as you know it is 2 years since my m/c, almost to the day. DH was so

ecstatic that his test was OK he got a bit carried away. So we had a mini

argument about that in front of the doctor.

So we left, with me upset and not wanting to talk to DH who was gloating.

Had strong words in the car on the way home. Eventually he saw my point of

view. After all she is saying it will increase my chance of spontaneous

ovulation - not something I have a problem with, but couldn't explain why I

didn't have problem conceiving Emma, and I was the same weight - more or

less. she also couldn't give me any research or statistics to back up her

claim.

We got into the 'you are only fat because you are greedy and eat too much'

argument. So we had to have a blow by blow account of what I eat before he

agreed that it was probably not a huge amount, and that perhaps, just

perhaps I am eating appropriately and so on and so on.

Not a good day.

I came home and did a search on Medline and in fact there is a lot of

research into sub fertility and obesity, but not much of it is appropriate

to me. Much of the work done has been for primary infertility, or IVF

patients. Some of the studies show no correlation between obesity and

secondary infertility.

So in the end DH was very sweet. Could eventually see that making a

statement that would alter my perception of myself in such an offhand way,

was not very good, and that I am not eating like a pig to maintain my

weight. He also offered me a health club membership if it would help at

all, and to be honest the thought of lounging in a pool while Emma is at

school is almost too good to pass up. He is also buying me some kind of

beauty treatment for my Chrissy pressie (which no he won't be here for).

But I am still angry at the doctor. I don't want to be the weight I am. I

hate it, but I don't need some doctor causing arguments between me and my DH

about it. Especially when she calculated the conversion from Kgs to stones

meant I was 18 stone for gods sake. I don't know where she did her maths!

anyway off to the Region 7 AGM today. Let see if the woman who is too fat

and ugly to have a baby is capable of taking the minutes, eh! (Pah!)

Sue,

What a horrible thing for a Dr. to say - esp a woman who one would hope would be

aware of the devastating effect it could have.

I may have only met you once, but you certainly didn't strike me as being obese!

God, Sue, what a horrid day.Good that all is well that can be found out.

Yuck that that doctors reaction is the classic - can't find anything wrong

so blame it on the patient!!! Sometimes....... well the words kill and

b****y spring to mind

Interestingly, as you know, I have been doing a diploma in diabetes lately

and type II diabetes commonly occurs in people who are overweight. So

everyone says - must lose weight, must lose weight like a mantra and is a

convenient excuse for blaming the patient when the diabetes fails to be

controlled by diet alone. BUT there are a ton of studies to show that not

gaining any more weight reduces chances of consequences and there is only a

little more benefit to be gained from actually losing weight. So we need to

congratulate our patients for staying the same not castigate them for not

losing (not that I ever do anyway - how could I?!!!)

Also fascinating was the role of exercise. So much so that dd2 and I have

been getting up 15minutes earlier every morning this week and going for a

fastish (for her) walk around the block. It is amazing how brill you feel

afterwards - and our aim now is to maintain weight, not lose it.

Sue,

First off, hooray for the big impending move! That does sound absolutely

wonderful, especially the sunshine bit :)

Secondly, BOOOOOO for the doctor. Bad maths and bad timing in the least!

And not too good marks for your DH either for crowing about his swimmers

and criticising you. Sounds like he's trying to make up for it, though.

Thirdly, even if you were fat and ugly - and those here who have met you

are saying you are not - you shouldn't call yourself that, even jokingly.

It's not good for you to be mean to yourself.

Phyllis

P/.S. This just in (just happened to have been looking there half an hour

ago) about fertility and weight, but it was a study done on women getting

IVF and other treatments, and the main problems in the extreme weight

groups.

Sue I have never met you - perhaps a northern coffee

morning is in order to say Goodbye- but you were

not too fat to have No1 so why number 2?

and who mentioned ugly?

Perhaps just a bit of relaxation in the sunshine and

seeing DH more will solve the problem

and stuff doctors who come out with C**p like

that.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

24 hours on and and a lot of kind words and I am feeling a lot better about it

all now. In the interest of research based evidence I spent a couple of hours

last night looking up research into obesity and subfertility. It is all there.

Yes obesity can cause delayed conception - in mothers with primary infertility

(I have secondary) as it decreases the chance of spontaneous ovulation

(something they don't think I have a problem with). One studies shown no

correlation between obesity and secondary IF. And obesity can be a risk factor

in m/c for women undergoing IVF - nothing about unassisted pregnancies. So as

usual a few half truths and you have a fact.

But I am going to take up the opportunity of getting a bit fitter. Nothing that

would have me running in the next olympics but it would be nice to swim a length

and not die at the end. I used to swim competitively and I miss it, so I may

well use the time that Emma is at school full time, to go swimming probably

daily or every other day and see if I can increase my fitness level. If it has

a knock on effect on my weight I will be pleased but I am not doing it for that.

To be fair to the doctor she didn't say I had to reduce my weight in an unkind

way, but I have struggled since my teens, with my self image and have finally,

in the last 4 years, come to the conclusion I am happier being cuddly than I am

berating myself for every mouthful. My Dh doesn't mind my weight, doesn't think

I am a disgusting blob, and he is the one who has to look at me every day. So

regardless of how I felt when I left the consulting room yesterday, I am feeling

a lot better about it today.

And stupid doctors don't know that if you tell me to do something I won't do

it. I need to make up my own mind about things, I do not blindly follow

instructions. And more than anything I do not trust the medical profession to

give me research based information. So when she said she couldn't give me any

stats or studies on her advice about weight, I guess I sort of lost it.

And I am absolutely sure that with three years of uninterrupted trying and a

good military hospital we will get it sorted. I won't be able to have the home

birth I wanted, but I can live with that, I may actually get a really organised,

supportive midwife and it won't matter too much.

A lot of issues resolved in super quick time. But thank you everyone for your

kind words.

Sue,

I've only met you once but I can assure you that you are neither fat nor

ugly and I wish we lived closer so that we could meet up again.

I am convinced that I can only conceive in March / April as we tried for

ages with both of ours and the one that I conceived at a different time of

year wasn 't meant to be. Perhaps you have a certain time of year when

you're more fertile and that hasn't coincided with when your DH is around

for a while. Hopefully 3 years in his company will sort out all your

problems.

If you visit your parents before you go away let the Hampshire / M3 corridor

mafia know & we can all meet up.
