Guest guest Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 Called Walmart today re the gluten status of their Equate brand children's multivitamins. They gave my the number to the company that makes the vitamins, Perrigo, located in MI. Their rep sounded very knowledgeable and stated that non of their children's vitamins contained gluten. He went further and told me that their company policy is to declare all gluten containing ingredients on the label. The next time I'm at Walmart I'm going to check for other Equate brand generics made by this company. Kerri Yahoo! Mail Bring photos to life! New PhotoMail makes sharing a breeze. Quote
Guest guest Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 Thanks, Kerri, for the info about the vitamins... I looked yesterday at Walmart at the Equate for women and the regular Equate..... I couldn't see where gluten is specifically listed, but it could be disguised?? I'm looking for a vitamin for me and my teen DD; can any of you tell me which brands you take that are GF? thanks! cheryl in maine Quote
Guest guest Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 Hi Cheryl! My Pioneer brand enzymes are gluten free- I’ll bet the other vitamins are and say so on the bottle. My multi is RX Vitamins Women’s formula from the Birds Hill Compounding Pharmacy in Needham, MA…not especially convenient for you….but they contain enough calcium that I don’t have to take nasty other supplements (calcium tabs make me nauseous.) DS takes a formula for teen males (there is a parallel female one) from PhytoPharmica (“Clinical Nutrients for Male Teens”), which I also bought at the compounding pharmacy, but is probably available more widely. These are the expensive kind, but I do trust them. Laurie lbilyeu@... Guest guest Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 Thanks, Laurie! I did find Calcium pills that are GF from Hannaford; where does one find their local compounding pharmacy? (I asked my pharmacist about gluten in my meds, and he said if it was there, it would be such a small amount I wouldn't have to worry about it! He's kinda old.) But I want to be sure. I was hoping Centrum or something widely available...? I hate for us to go without vitamins, but I'm afraid of buying the wrong thing, too! hugs, cheryl in maine Quote
Guest guest Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 I believe Centrum does say no gluten on the label. The other one I've seen that one is Natures Made. I've seen those at Target and CVS. Guest guest Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 Not sure if this is what you're after, Cheryl, but I've used Clear Spring Pharmacy for compounding locally. You typically need a perscription, but not sure about vitamins though. What I did when I wanted a specialty script that someone else used was to bring the info from their perscription bottle to my doc and had her write the same script. Then brought that to Clear Spring and they prepared it for me. If you don't want to drive that far then they mail them out. I think they told me it would be an extra $5 to mail, but that price would definitely be location dependent so I'd call to be sure. I discussed all of my allergies with the pharmacist and I had no problems at all. He does even have the special equipment to do Enteric Coatings (the EC on the end of some med names) required for some meds. My insurance company did have a few places in network that do compounding, but none of them could do the EC and most didn't have vegatarian capsuls (I'm allergic to beef and pork so I can't use gelatin). You can contact your insurance company for a list of in network pharmacies. The insurance company didn't actually know which ones do compounding, but I called all the ones that weren't big chains to find out what they can do. http://www.bedfordpharmacy.com/index.html is the URL for the one I love in Bedford. Guest guest Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 I take the GNC Women's Health multi-vitamin. The label does say no gluten. In addition to the usual vitamins and minerals (no iron), they have compounds that are supposed to help women's general health. They were recommended to me by my RN aunt who also has hypothyroid. They are big to swallow. Quote
Guest guest Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 For vitamins, I love the Country Life brand. They've got a wide variety of vitamins that are gluten and many other allergens free. There are a couple of other brands that are also good, but I know this line is great and I've never had problems with anything I've gotten from them. They've also been recommended by every employee I've spoken with at different health food stores and by my doctor. Shaws and Hannifords also have gluten free lines of vitamins in their health food sections. They clearly label which ones are gluten free. Guest guest Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 I can’t remember how I found this list of compounding pharmacies—I think it was when I was looking into natural/bio-identical hormone replacement. I'll get a higher percentage covered. I think I need to check them out. I guess I hadn't gone far enough down my list when calling pharmacies to see if they can do the EC. That's only 10 minutes away too. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Trudy in NH Quote

Guest guest Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 I think you will be better off going to a health food store for a high quality vitamin without all those fillers and synthetics etc. found in something like Centrum. Earlier I asked my Mom, who works in the vitamin industry (but is not affiliated with these companies!) to type up some recommendations. Personally I really like Super Nutrition, although the pill is somewhat large. I feel better when I take it (more energy) and I also notice that my skin seems clearer. It's got lots of great stuff in it besides your basic vitamins like spirulina etc. You can also go to a health food store and ask a specialist there to help you find a gluten free supplement. (Helpfulness may vary but sometimes they really know their stuff!!) Many high quality vitamins are clearly labeled gluten free... PS My Mom recommends taking multiple supplements a day, but I take one Super Nutrition a day and feel great! However newly diagnosed celiacs may really want to take multiples... ---------------------------------- Basic recommendations for gluten free supplements: 1.Multi vitamins & minerals, food based from a company whose entire product line is gluten free and hypoallergenic. Eg:Super Nutrition in Oakland, Ca. 1- www.supernutritionusa.com (A one-per-day type will NOT be sufficient, please choose one which suggests multiple doses.) 2.Omegas, from flaxseed oil or a combination including it. Eg:Barlean's Organic Oils in Ferndale, Wa. 1- www.barleans.com 3.Enzymes, a full spectrum formula to digest all types of food, such as Vitase Digestion formula by Prevail. Eg:Prevail in Or. & Green Bay, Wi. 1- www.prevail.com A more thorough program would benefit all, however this is to get you started on nutritional supplementation: Multiple vitamins/minerals for covering the bases, omegas to enhance the assimilation and aid in brain function, and enzymes to aid in digestion. These are best utilized by taking them each multiple times per day with food. All of these are readily available from your local health food store.Remember it is absolutely critical to remove all traces of gluten from your environment, then you can achieve better health. After working with hundreds of people the past years, I realize you have more questions.Ask away. Best wishes for your good health, > > Thank you ALL for your vitamin info! > As usual, this group is a wealth of knowledge! > Hugs, > Cheryl in Maine > Quote
