Guest guest Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 Ditto Ruth about the smoking. I too did not smoke and no family history. Last week I had this thing in my mind that Aluminum in deodorant caused my bc. Who knows!! I probably could go on and on. SharonC & nne Svihlik wrote: Ruth I am sorry to hear about your Mom. Guest guest Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 Hi Sharon, Theres a lot of controversy on the aluminum. I looked it up on Snopes I think it was, awhile back, and it came back false. I guess it depends on who you are talking to. Guest guest Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 I read today that the family history doesn't even play into 85% of BC cases! I was astounded. CAT Family History? Guest guest Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 Sharon, I don't know about insurance coverage, but my oncologist mentioned "life insurance" being a problem (i.e., purchasing additional coverage, etc.) once status is known. Best, PS I'm glad to hear your daughter is starting early - bravo!! Quote
Guest guest Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 hummmmmm. All my doctor's thought it was significant when my sister and I were both in early 40's when dx. They also thought it was significant that we have a colorectal cancer history. They are going to start doing mammograms on my daughter this year at the age of 30. Guest guest Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 My doctor wanted me to have the BRC testing also, it cost $4,000, insurance didn't cover it...and I think I don't want to know, there is not one family member in my family that has ever had cancer before til now....I couldn't change anything if I was positive and I sure couldn't change the future...so I would rather not know....does that make any sense to anyone???? Guest guest Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 My doctor really didn't recommend testing. He said that just the fact that my sister and I were pre-menapausal at the time of dx. was enough for him to think it was genetic. I talked to my daughter about doing the testing and she didn't want me to. Said that knowing that she was at high risk was enough. My doctor actually mentioned the fact that if I had the testing and it was positive that some insurance companies could use it to deny my daughter coverage. I talked to two friends that are in the insurance business and while they couldn't say for sure, they did say that the doctor had good reason for concern. Guest guest Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 I'm just glad that her doctor is on top of it. We go to the same gyn group but have different doctors. I typed up a family medical history and she took a copy to both of her doctors. I listed every medical problem on both sides of the family back to grandparents and their siblings. I also started a spreadsheet of all my medical tests. When and where done. I can't tell you how many times the provider of another test has been pleased to get that information. After almost 11 years of this I just can't remember it all. I also have a list of all my meds. If I'm undergoing tests I just make sure everything is up to date and take with me. I have 4 folders on my desk, one for each of us plus my Mom. My husband and daughter know that if there is an emergency that they need to grab the books. Actually that just reminded me that some of my mom's friends want blank forms so they can do the same thing. Guest guest Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 Tonya That makes perfect sense to me. I wouldn't want to pay $4,000 to find out I am positive to having more cancer. Janet Quote

Guest guest Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 I was more concerned about it being a problem for my daughter. I had what I thought was plenty of insurance. But a couple of years ago Nate's company offered $25,000 with no qualifing so we jumped at it. And it is the kind that I can keep even if he changes jobs or retires. I was actually approached about a cancer policy the other day and they said since it had been over 10 years that I can get it now. Still thinking about that. Guest guest Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 This is very true. Once it has been determined you have the BRAC1 or BRAC2 gene it will be difficult to obtain both Life and Health insurance. If you already have the insurance they can not cancel you for having the gene. This is very inmportant when a young person without either type of insurance is diagnosed with the gene. I know many people that are afraid to be tested because of this reason. Guest guest Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 Well we have been having this discussion with my daughter for 10 years. She says it is enough to know that she is at very high risk. She does her self exams and has a yearly exam. She will have mammogram this year at age 30. She is young and unmarried so I'm sure she looks at it differently than I did at age 44 when I was dx. SharonBtobie klemz wrote: They say there is a test u can do now. To have ur jeans tested to see if u will b/c in the furture. Some ppl want to know others dont.i told my daugther last nite that she needs to start getting tested. cause she can get bc now and its like she didnt even hear me. its like she dont want to know. i cant make her get the test done. but i would feel better if she did. she is 27 now. Sharon wrote: That was my daughter's decision also. We know that my sister and I both had bc so she says she knows she is high risk and that is all she needs to know.
