Guest guest
Hey Gordon, an Echo is one of the coolest tests on earth. No prep, IV's etc. They can perform it while your resting, or if the physician wants to, he can do a Stress Echo, (but only if he/she told you it was gonna be a stress echo) which means they do it right after you've exercised (I think usually on a treadmill). They run a little instrument over your left chest where your heart lies, then have your turn on your left side and do the same thing Sometimes they have to sit up as well, and also ask you to " bear down " like your gonna have a bowel movement. The purpose of the test is to assess the patency of your heart valves (tight versus floppy and leaking) and the strength of each heart chamber. You can actually watch it on a t.v. screen as they do it. Kinda like when women are pregnant and have an ultrasound to check on the baby's size etc. Anyway it's really cool. One of the most important features of the test is something called an EF which stands for ejection fraction. This is how strong your left ventricle (powerhouse of the heart) sweezes and pumps the blood out of the heart. So anyway, if they are evaluating you for significant fatigue, they are looking for the function of your valves, esp aortic and mitral, as well as how much oomph your left ventricle has. A normal EF is around 65 - 70%, NOT based on 100%. So if for instance they told you your EF was 60 %, don't worry, that's not really bad, cause again it's base on a normal of 65 - 70%. The color flow part of it detects blood flow pattern and velocities in the heart valves and great vessels. The blue and red hues are photographed to identify the blood flow directions and velocities through the heart and valves. They do this part of the test through the echo machine itself. (No dye is injected in you). Hope that makes sense. Bonnie string925572003 wrote:Hi everyone: I've been trying to get life insurance for a while now but keep getting turned down. I asked her if I had a chance but she wasn't sure because she doesn't know what happens after it goes for review. Well if your out there lurking, and you remember me, they just sent a letter denying my application. Oh, well I'll keep on trying. Just a side note, my last Neph visit went really well. I asked him if there was anything in the lab that would give a sign of why I trired so easily he said no, but he gave a referral to do Echo exam of heart Doppler Color Flow just in case. Guest guest
Hi Gordon, I am sorry you were declined. One thought, AFLAC approved me BUT with the condition that any IgAN related claims would have a two year exclusion. All I had to do was make it two years with no claims and it will now cover me. You might try to see if they will agree to that. Good luck with your Echo test. I wish there was an easy answer to the fatigue, but it seems like so many of us fight it regardless of being anemic or not. Guest guest
Hi Gordon I've had an echocardiogram of the heart a number of times. It's basically just an ultrasound, the same one they might do of the kidneys or the abdomen (which I've also had), or the one they do on pregnant women. It can tell a cardiologist a lot about how your heart if functioning, but it's really just one test that. I had to have one in 2002 as part of my potential transplant recipient evaluation. There's nothing to it, as you just take your shirt off and lie down, usually with your hands above your head on a pillow. The tech tells you to move on one side or the other. 20 minutes, and that's about it. The only thing that can be uncomfortable about it is that the probe has to be pressed into the ribs, and if you don't have much fat there, it's not too comfortable - but it's not really pain. I say it's just one test, because, if there's any reason to do an echo, a cardiologist will almost invariably also want a stress test on the treadmill at some point. An echocardiogram is easily the least bothersome test in the world of being a kidney patient.
