I'm sorry to hear that you are reaching that point of needing the information day but you have a strength about you that inspires. I was watching a show on the Science channel tonight about blizzards and the hazards caused by them. In part of the show they were talking about getting people with health concerns out of the area and into hospitals before the storm hits....all of a sudden it hit me " man that might be me soon if I end up on dialysis. " We get a good heavy storm at least once a year here and where I'm at we normally can't get out for 4-5 days afterwards. It hit me that I would have to make it into town before the roads closed if I were on dialysis....Just one more thing to think about when my time comes... Let us know what you find out in Sept. I am about one month behind you as I have been referred to the dialysis information day in early September and I have to decide the same thing. I am still hoping I have a year and a half before starting, but my doctor has decided I need to be transferred to the renal care team that takes over from 20% through ESRD. I can't give you advise on methods of dialysis yet, but just wanted you to know you are not alone. Hopefully that day never comes for you, and if it does, that it would be years away. Living out of the city like you do would mean special precautions, especially if you get snowed in for that many days in a row. Makes me more appreciative of having such good access to medical care. That is something none of us should take for granted. Guest guest Posted August 8, 2004 Report Share Posted August 8, 2004 I had that experience a year ago. Not a storm, but the big central/eastern Canada/North-Eastern US power failure last August. What they do is the doctors and nurses look at who can go a few days without dialysis and who can't, and they make appropriate arrangements. Even though hemodialysis is every other day except the extra day off on weekends, most people can easily go 4 days off or so if they watch the potassium and don't eat much meat, in an emergency.
