Hi Deborah,

I didn't see this post come through on the 5th either. Every now and then

there is a hiccup on Yahoo and something posts twice, or does not post at all.

I am just so sorry about 's surgery being canceled. I can't even

imagine the extent of the devastation you have to be feeling. I will pray for

you

and and the family as well as for 's donor.

I am really really sorry.

I am afraid I can't answer about the stents. I have not heard of them in

conjunction with transplant surgery, but I can tell you my father-in-law had

some

stents put in near his heart and they helped him before his death a few years

ago. I realize that is not the same as a stent in conjunction with kidneys,

but if it is any comfort to , Dad never felt them and was never

uncomfortable in any way after having them put in.

I pray another donor will come soon for .

So sorry to hear that Deb. Another opportunity will come along, I'm sure. This

is the first I've seen about it, so your original message wasn't posted the

first time, as far as I know, for whatever reason.

It must be devastating for you, but I've learned myself the hard way that you

simply cannot count on a transplant being a sure thing until it's done. There

are just too many things that can stop it. All any one of us can do is to

prepare for it, be hopeful and optimistic about it, but keep a realistic

perspective about the whole thing. is young and healthy, and he will be

able to handle dialysis until the next opportunity for a transplant - and there

will be a next time.

The access in his arm is surely a fistula. Usually, it takes a few months after

the surgery before it can be used, but in a pinch, on healthy, strong people

with good veins, when the patient is already on hemodialysis, it can sometimes

be used gently fairly soon after it has healed. It provides better dialysis than

any type of catheter.

I can almost feel your disappointment, because I've been there, and I'm sure

that any words I say to the effect that that's the way it goes sometimes with

tranplants won't help much at this point.

's 9/7 transplant

I sent this in 9/5 but didn't see it come though.

's 9/7 transplant has been cancelled. His donor's blood work showed

elevated liver enzymes. The donor has the hepatitis B in his body. It didn't

show up in May during his 1st blood work. There are no words to describe what we

are feeling.

We spent all day Friday 9/3 at Vanderbilt visting all the doctors involved.

We had not been gone 30 mins when they called and told us this. Plans has been

made. Family and friends were coming in.

Now has to look into getting an arm access (don't feel like looking up

the word). His catheter has not been working good for a couple of weeks but

with transplant so close we held off.

Deborah,

I can't imagine the devastation that you, , and your family

are feeling right now about the cancellation. I am so sorry that

this happened. I guess this just goes to show that we can never be

totally and completely sure about a surgery happening until the

donor and recipient are both on the operating table.

There is one positive thing that I would like to mention though--at

least they did not come to and tell him that he is eliminated

from the transplant list. (Just trying to help with some hopeful

thoughts) He can and WILL get a transplant, and I will be praying

for him that a new donor comes around ASAP.

Good luck to you, and I'm sorry again...
