I'm sure it's the kind that is in common use today. My biopsy was in 1993. It

just looks like a long thin tube with a pistol grip at the end. It's called a

needle biopsy, but it's really more like a hollow tube.

Don't worry. Most people don't feel actual pain, only the fear of pain. There's

more discomfort than anything else. They make a tiny incision somewhere on your

mid back behind the kidney. Then they push the " needle " in. You really just feel

a numb pushing sensation, as it's pushed through the muscle tissue back there.

You actually don't feel a thing from inside the kidney, as there are no pain

nerves in there. The rest of the needle path will be numbed, so you should not

feel any pain. They will probably take a few samples, and each time, you will

feel something pushing in there. It doesn't take long before it's done, and you

are being wheeled out to the recovery room.

Just try not to tense up too much, and you will be fine.

Hi Pierre,

can you describe this biopsy needle to me and how it differs from the " old "

style. How

long ago was this?

Hi Pierre,

after my post last night I read another in which you gave the date of your

biopsy. I've

already had my biopsy, in 1995, and it was with the same needle you describe.

When

you said something about a new style needle I thought you meant recently new. I

wish

my doctor had described the sound and feeling of the needle, the loud snap and

the

jolt in my back scared the crap out of me. He may as well have just yelled BOO

in my

face.

I'm glad that my Neph told me about the sound, but I was lucky that the Tech who

actually did my biopsy " set it off " beforehand so that I could hear it.

It did make a big difference knowing what I was going to hear, and knowing that

it was " normal " to hear it so loud.

Sorry about that . I mistook your post for another one from someone who

stills has the biopsy ahead of them. There's so many of us on here now that it's

starting to get confusing
