Some people say that it is bad to eat at night, particularly carbs. Something

about it converting more to fat or sugar when you sleep. However, I often do

this and still lose weight. As long as you stay in points, you should be fine.

Question

Does anyone in this program eat at night? Is that bad? I stayed OP

today, but I had some chips in salsa (suprisingly low in points, I

had roughly 10 chips and 2 tbsp. of salsa) at like 10:00 tonight. Is

that bad? Should I stay away from that? I've heard eating at night

is bad for you. Thanks!

I eat at night, always have. I've lost 72 pounds in 9 1/2 months. I always save

5-8 points for nighttime eating. It's what I call customizing the program to

fit my needs. I usually have a glass of milk and carbs.

Lyn, I'm with you. I mentioned that I typically eat my dinner late because

of my hours at the salon....and my meals always have carbs in them..in fact,

I might also have a bag of low fat popcorn as well....

I lost 55 pounds in about 7 months that way.....so I disagree that nighttime

eating is bad...

I've heard of people adjusting their journaling to accommodate night time

eating......I just tend to plan my day around my evening...reverse

journaling, if you will.

It's not bad if you're hungry and you have points. I eat at night all

the time. I've lost over 100 pounds.

Hi,

I haven't written in awhile and haven't done very well keeping up with the

emails here as it produces a ton so I'm on Digest, so ya'll probably don't

remember me.

A little refresher: My son was diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy after being

in a moped/car accident last September. It took several months to diagnose

him. He was finally diagnosed in February 2004 after a kidney biopsy. I

started taking him to a Children's Hospital (Kosair's) in Louisville, KY

because

the Neph we were seeing locally seemed clueless to IgA and just children in

general. My son just turned 14 years old.

They have him on 4000 mg of fish oil and a blood pressure medicine. He also

takes Allegra daily because he's 1 huge hive if he doesn't. Does anyone

else have this problem??? He's never had hives before.

Ok now for my main question. My son has lots of back pain in his kidney

area. Sometimes it's so severe he can't get out of bed. A couple weeks ago he

was in the shower and the pain was so intense he had to get out because he

couldn't stand up any longer. Does this seem to be normal to you more

experienced ones here? He's been down on the couch for 60% of his summer due

to this

back pain. This morning he couldn't get out of bed to get ready for school.

He forced himself to, and usually a couple hours after Tylenol is taken

he's ok. About 3 weeks ago he peed bright red blood. Most of the time it's

dark brown, light brown, lots of bubbly pee which I know is protein but gosh,

when does this stop......or does it? I called the Pediatric Nephrologist last

week to see if this is all normal or if there's something I could do to be

helping him. She says it's NOT normal and thinks he has a kidney infection or

kidney stones and recommended we go to the Family doc to rule it out. We

went Wednesday. Family Doc said there was blood and protein in the urine but

no

signs of kidney infection. He went Friday morning for an ultrasound of the

kidneys to see if there was kidney stones. I haven't heard back the results

yet but I really don't think this is the problem either since he's put up

with this back pain since the diagnosis.

ARGH! I'm just so frustrated and feel so helpless. If anyone has any

insight I'd appreciate it very much.

Hi

I'm not a doctor, but I would have to say that kind of pain is not normal

with IgAN. It can happen, but it's really beyond what is considered

" normal " , if anything is " normal " with this disease. The fact that Tylenol

helps suggests to me that it's external to the kidney itself. What the cause

is I don't know. It might be loin pain hematuria syndrome - the cause of

which is really unknown. People with other kinds of kidney disease can have

this too. Unfortunately, I have no advice to give as to how to get relief

from that pain. I think if I were a doctor, I might be thinking of a kidney

stone as well.

Now, the hives are really more worrisome, I think. Any idea at all what

could be causing the hives? You know, there are some people who are allergic

to ACE inhibitors, the class of blood pressure meds commonly prescribed to

people with kidney disease. Hives is one sign of it. Did the hives start at

the same times, more or less, as the drug was started? If the hives are

indeed from that drug, then I would worry about a very serious adverse

reaction called angioedema. Please discuss this with his doctor. I had some

red patches develop all over my torso every time I took an ACE inhibitor.

Nobody worried about it too much, but sure enough, a few weeks later I ended

in the ER with the throat swelling which is characteristic of angioedema.

The angioedema doesn't necessarily happen right away.

I guess it could also be an allergic reaction to the fish oil (fish oil in

those amounts should really be considered a drug, not a food supplement).

Can you see any kind of pattern as to when the hives started vs when the

drug or fish oil was started? I personally don't think it's good idea to

simply counteract an adverse drug effect with another drug, ie. the Allegra.

The coloured urine is probably not something to be too concerned about. It

usually does not take much blood to colour the urine like that, and it will

eventually go away. Again, sometimes some drugs just don't agree with some

people. Fish oil tend to " thin " the blood and it may make that bleeding

worse. The foam may be protein. Proteinuria is treatable if it's heavy, but

even if it's mild, it can cause a lot of foam. I swear I had heavy foam

since at least 1980, and it continued right until I started dialysis in

2002. In fact, I still have it.
