I've been getting alot of response and have been reading different e-

mails re: being on social security disability. Question for the

group: Were you all able to qualify upon initial application, and if

not, how long and complicated was it before you became eligible?

Don, about your question on SSDI. I could not apply until I was out of work

6 months and then I applied and was denied. A few months later I reapplied

with the help of a disability advocate here locally and went through our local

Social Security office and had my doctors detail their papers a whole lot more.

Finally after a good two months I finally got it but there is a lot of

paperwork that went into it. All this happened back in 1996 and they knew

little

about PLS. It will probably be a bit easier now. I'm sure others will write

about their experiences. Good luck.........Flora

Hi!

I applied in April and received SSDI in August.I felt i could not work any

longer and my doctor agreed. I called my local social security office asked

for an application and arranged for a telephone interview. Within less than

a week I had my application and interview. I sent in my application with all

doctors and information that was requested asap. I received another

questionnaire that i sent in right away. I received a letter from social

security about 3 months after the process was started stating i was

eligible. I was very worried about it but it wasn't that bad. The people

there were very supportive and nice. My advice would be to make sure your

doctor knows you are applying and give social security all pertinent info

they ask for. I believe the website for SS is www.socialsecurity.gov . Good

luck-you will have no problem.

I was approved on my initial application. No problems.

The attorneys we had at the Phoenix Connection in June gave us a few

suggestions.

1. Make sure your doctor is in agreement and working with you. It will

ultimately be his report that determines your eligibility.

2. On the forms they send you... hand write them, use only the space provided

and talk in terms of " one a good day I can.... " " on a bad day I can..... " .

3. Keep a copy of everything they send you. They may send you a second

questionnaire and you want your answers to be consistent.

4. You are more likely to be approved if you are over 50.

Hope this helps.

Congratulations Martha. That is one less thing to stress you, and for that,

I am very pleased. Financial stress is a very heavy burden, and one that I am

very glad has been relieved for you.
