Well, I really appreciate the award, and I'm very grateful that folks think

that well of me, but you guys are going to have to quit with the accolades

or I won't be able to get my head through the door.

EMS is a wonderful profession that has been very good to me. I've met some

outstanding people and made bonds that will last beyond memory. Thank you

all so very, very much. Please come to EMStock so I can see you all in one

place.

With my kindest regards,

Donn

You know Larry, I was thinking the same thing. Mr. Donn worked

opposite of me for a couple years in a place and at a time when

things weren't just the best in the world and I was always impressed

by how he handled things. The tougher it got the harder he worked. He

always managed to get the job done, always got the pats on the back,

but never got the big head. We need more bridge builders like him in

this industry.

I was a couple thousand miles away when the conference happened and

sincerely regret that I wasn't able to be present when he received

this award. Best of luck Donn.

As always, Donn, best thing ever happened at conference was your getting the

Hello Dusty , welcome to our group. A couple of things about your e-mail jumped out at me. I've only been SCD for a month so I don't know a lot about what you asked. However, you should know that this diet allows eggs. Whole eggs. Scrambled, fried, poached etc. We cook with eggs not just the whites. Sometimes whites but usually the entire egg.

The second thing that jumped out at me was your reference to your daughter being on Paxil (because I take Paxil). There was a news release on October 2- see the attached link about the 40 million dollar settlement regarding adolescents and Paxil. http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsNews/idUSL247863520081002

Sometimes it's about choosing the lesser of the evils, however, I always want to make informed decisions so I wanted to let you know.

In the past month on this site, there's been a dialogue about the 2nd brain in one's stomach. See if you can find that conversation in archives.

I wish you and your family health.

(unknown)

I might have already sent this. I'm not going to go into as much detail as I just did in the last email I sent an hour ago.

My daughter is 13 and has celiac disease and has been gf since 12/06. She had extreme anxiety/ panic attacks before the diagnosis.

Everything started to happen again this summer,- over the top anxiety/panic and then stomach pains similar to 06 before her celiac diagnosis. We just found out through tests at a nutritionist that she has an overgrowth of d-lactate bacteria in her intestines and some food intolerances (to dairy, almonds, egg whites, pineapple and peanuts). She is on Paxil, b complex vitamins, probiotic, absorb-aid, and magnesium. We started the SCD a week and a half ago and really started eliminating the intolerances in the last few days. The dairy confuses me with the SCD because you can have butter, some cheeses and the homemade yogurt. Also, I find it hard to bake with just egg yolks and not the whites. So those are my only two gliches in the diet. Otherwise it's do-able since I'm used to cooking gf for her in the last few years.

My main question to you is this - have you dealt with anxiety/panic and the SCD helped you? She has not been to school this school year yet due to the anxiety/panic. Everything I read suggests a brain/bowel connection. And I do see it with her from 2 years ago. The GF diet helped her anxiety. So there has to be some connection. She's scared the diet will not help her anxiety. (She is seeing a therapist also). Please tell me if you think the diet will help her anxiety/panic attacks and if you think I'm on the right track. I need some encouragement.

Also Dusty, many of her symptoms are also Splenda usage symptoms - anxiety/panic and bowel issues. I also hated leaving the house. Over 3500 products have Splenda in them and she may have a sensitivity to it. You might want to research that too. Good luck, Terri

Terri and Kurt-

Thanks for replying so quickly. The reason I mentioned the egg whites is that 's food intolerance tests came back as egg whites, dairy, peanuts, pineapple and almonds. So I'm trying to do the SCD with just using egg yolks. And the whole dairy thing has me perplexed. I know on this diet you can have a few cheeses, homemade yogurt and butter. But if someone has dairy as a food intolerance, can she have the cheeses, homemade yogurt and butter?

It's hard enough to be on this diet but then these intolerances even make it harder to cook/bake for her. Any suggestions? Or does anyone think that the cheeses, homemade yogurt and butter are ok even with a dairy intolerance? She needs to get better ASAP since she's missing school. I am willing to do anything at this point as far as cooking/baking.

Also, I'm still dying to hear from someone who had anxiety/panic attacks and the diet helped them. That's really my main reason to try this listserv.

Terri and Kurt-

Thanks for also telling me about Splenda. She never used it. The only thing she is using now is Agave, which is like honey but better to digest. It's at health food stores.

As far as the Paxil, I'm not ready to take her off of it yet. The one nutritionist said to deal with the stomach issues first. My other nutritionist is totally against Paxil and even Tylenol. There are extremes for everything and I feel that's an extreme at this point.

You might want to see if she can tolerate ghee, however, instead of regular butter - there's a recipe in the archives, so if you go to the webpage, just search ghee - it's back a month or two ago. She might not react to ghee as she did to other dairy items. Maybe start her on regular probiotics instead of the homemade yogurt and then, as I said, retest her tolerances periodically. is on a probiotic that the nutritionist has her taking.

The only reason I want to do the yogurt is so I can make her a smoothie, etc.

Does anyone have other suggestions for substituting butter or egg whites in these SCD recipes? I'm using egg yolks in the recipes. Can I use olive oil to replace the butter? Just wondering.

Terri and Kurt-Thanks for also telling me about Splenda. She never used it. The only thing she is using now is Agave, which is like honey but better to digest. agave is not legal on SCD, it's inulin, and will keep feeding whatever pathogenic bacteria she has. So use honey instead. http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/legal/legal_illegal_a-c.htmhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agave_syrupProductionTo produce agave nectar, juice is expressed from the core of the agave, called the piña.[1] The juice is filtered, then heated, tohydrolyze carbohydrates into sugars. The main carbohydrate is a complex form of fructose called inulin or fructosan. The filtered, hydrolyzed juice is concentrated to a syrup-like liquid a little thinner than honey and ranges in color from light to dark depending on the degree of processing. The syrup naturally contains quantities of Iron, Calcium, Potassium & Magnesium which contribute to the resulting color.[citation needed]There is a United States patent for a process that uses enzymes to hydrolyze the polyfructose extract into fructose, using an enzyme derived from Aspergillus niger (black mold).[2][edit]CompositionAgave syrup consists primarily of fructose and glucose. One source[3] gives 92% fructose and 8% glucose; another[4] gives 56% fructose and 20% glucose. These differences presumably reflect variation from one vendor of agave syrup to another. There is some concern about the health effects of fructose, since Agave has a fructose content much higher than high-fructose corn syrup. Due to its fructose content and the fact that the glycemic index only measures glucose levels, agave syrup is notable in that its glycemic index and glycemic load are lower than many other natural sweeteners on the market. You need to realize the difference between DAIRY.. and how that is

defined.

Usually what is meant by that is LACTOSE intolerance.

Yogurt is milk that has had the lactose removed through the

fermentation process.

Hard cheeses are also fermented and aged which removes the lactose.

Don't rely on on " tests " to tell you things. That is why this diet is

great, because you start from ground zero , keep a journal , and work

your way up.

Everyone is different.

Human beings were meant to eat meat, fish and eggs...cow's milk

dairy... is every hard to digest, that's why they don't give it to babies.

Do a little reading, ask questions, be your own scientist.

Doctor's are not nutritionists or scientists, they just prescribe what

they were taught to prescribe and do the tests that someone told them

to do .

YOU, my dear, have to do your own research for your child.

You have the internet as your learning tool. Learn the difference

between MILK, DAIRY, LACTOSE. etc.

That will teach you alot.

Don't mean to be short, just wanted to let you know, you have to be

the one that figures it out, and you will. I promise.

12/06. She had extreme anxiety/ panic attacks before the diagnosis.

> Everything started to happen again this summer,- over the top

anxiety/panic and then stomach pains similar to 06 before her celiac

diagnosis. We just found out through tests at a nutritionist that she

has an overgrowth of d-lactate bacteria in her intestines and some

food intolerances (to dairy, almonds, egg whites, pineapple and

peanuts). She is on Paxil, b complex vitamins, probiotic, absorb-aid,

and magnesium. We started the SCD a week and a half ago and really

started eliminating the intolerances in the last few days. The dairy

confuses me with the SCD because you can have butter, some cheeses and

the homemade yogurt. Also, I find it hard to bake with just egg yolks

and not the whites. So those are my only two gliches in the diet.

Otherwise it's do-able since I'm used to cooking gf for her in the

last few years.

> My main question to you is this - have you dealt with anxiety/panic

and the SCD helped you? She has not been to school this school year

yet due to the anxiety/panic. Everything I read suggests a

brain/bowel connection. And I do see it with her from 2 years ago.

The GF diet helped her anxiety. So there has to be some connection.

She's scared the diet will not help her anxiety. (She is seeing a

therapist also). Please tell me if you think the diet will help her

anxiety/panic attacks and if you think I'm on the right track. I need

some encouragement.

Hi You can use Ghee(clarified butter) as a substitute for butter.

This is available in Indian grocery stores. In India we use Ghee in

place of butter.

> Thanks for replying so quickly.  The reason I mentioned the egg

whites is that 's food intolerance tests came back as egg

whites, dairy, peanuts, pineapple and almonds.  So I'm trying to do

the SCD with just using egg yolks. And the whole dairy thing has me

perplexed.  I know on this diet you can have a few cheeses, homemade

yogurt and butter.  But if someone has dairy as a food intolerance,

can she have the cheeses, homemade yogurt and butter?

and then periodically retest to see how she is doing.  as her gut

heals, there's a good likelihood that these intolerances (or at least

some) might begin to clear up.

> You might want to see if she can tolerate ghee, however, instead of

regular butter - there's a recipe in the archives, so if you go to

the webpage, just search ghee - it's back a month or two ago.  She

might not react to ghee as she did to other dairy items.

yogurt and then, as I said, retest her tolerances periodically.

even make it harder to cook/bake for her.  Any suggestions? Or does

anyone think that the cheeses, homemade yogurt and butter are ok even

with a dairy intolerance?

> Again, you'll have to find out yourself.  Some people might do all

right - some will do well after time - others won't do okay.  So you

have to test her reactions.
