Hello ladies! I read your messages every day. I've read about many of you

who have had several myo surgeries. How do you do it? I've never broken a

bone in my 32 years. I'm really scared to do this surgery. I have two

fibroids one is really large. My doctor will have to do a zipper incision

instead of the bikini incision. I've printed out everything that pertains to

me. I'm doing the myo in hopes that one day to have children. You know

preserve the fertility. I've thought about all the times I didn't want to

have a baby (when I was younger) and now my chance may be taken away.

I'm single with no husband prospects so I'm not sure why I want to do

this. I'm such a chicken and wouldn't do it if I didn't have to. I mean I

thought I would have children someday but didn't realize my clock would have

a timer on it.

It's real depressing ladies. All I do is eat. I can't get focused to

get healthy for this surgery in December. I'm even scared that I may die

during surgery. So ladies..do your magic. Help me to get through this.

I so understand what you are saying. I am 34 and also have never

had a thing wrong with me. This is so overwhelming some days that

I think it must all be a bad dream. Unfortunately--it's not. I've had

some of the very same thoughts about the fact of waiting so long to

have children and now it may not even be an option. I am very

fortunate in having a wonderfully supportive husband--but it still

is difficult to absorb all that is happening as well as what the after

effects of my myo will be. I am also having it done in dec. I try

not to think about the big " D " word as it freaks me out too much

but I know in the back of mind somewhere that there a slim

possibility of it happening. I can deal with this OK but I really

worry about my family worrying about it. We have never had

anyone in my immediate family have any type of major surgery

and this is a concern to all. Anyway, enough rambling--just

wanted to let you know I understand and it is good for me

to see in type the things that I am tucking away and not dealing

with. Keep expressing your thoughts and feelings--it helps

alot of people in alot ways....

Hi Felicia,

I feel the same way you do about surgery and I do not

have any symptoms with my fibroid/s. Do you have

symptoms?

My problem is that it is very large - 20 weeks size.

It is on the outside of my uterus so it doesn't cause

me problems except my stomach looks fat.

The Infertility Specialist that I saw yesterday

recommends taking it out. He said that I probably

could get through a pregnancy but it could risk a

premature delivery and why risk that if not necessary?

I was against the surgery unless it was life

threatening but with the size of my fibroid - I just

don't like knowing something that big is inside me and

doesn't belong there. I am hoping it will slim down

my abdominal area too.

Am I crazy to get a myo even though I don't have any

symptoms? It seems like most people have very bad

bleeding and it really affects your quality of life.

Thanks,

Lori

Lori - I don't think you're crazy! I also had a myo recently (just

3 weeks ago), and had very few symptoms. But, preserving fertility

is important to me, and my doctor recommended that I have the

fibroids removed now, so that I could heal and be ready for

pregnancy if/when I should be so fortunate. If you think that myo

is the best thing for you, then do it .... and think positive about

the outcome.

Felicia,

I completely understand - like you, prior to my myo surgery 3 weeks

ago, I had never been in a hospital, never been under anesthesia,

and have quite an aversion to needles (I don't even like having my

blood drawn). I'm also single, never married, no kids, age 39, and

feeling that old biological clock ticking rather loudly.

However - I did focus on being as healthy and and positive as

possible before my surgery. I look at it this way - we might not

have had any control in these fibroids growing inside of us - but we

DO have complete control over how we respond, both in terms of our

treatment choices and our attitude. I chose to be positive and do

everything in my control to prepare for surgery, and just thought

about how I was being proactive in preparing myself for future child-

bearing (hopefully), and just thought about how good I would feel

once recovered and with a flatter abdomen!

I am 3-weeks post-surgery and feeling about 90% normal - I've been

driving for over a week now, am sitting at my computer for long

streches without any problems. I picked up a friend's toddler

yesterday and carried her around - it was probably 10-15 minutes

into it before I realized that " hmmmm .... wonder if it's such a

good idea to be carrying around this 25-pound child " - but I was

fine. I'm still trying to take it easy physically for another week,

but then plan to start back into exercising with my trainer again.

I strongly believe that my preparation beforehand - exercise, good

nutrition, some herbal supplements, and positive attitude - were all

factors contributing to a recovery that has gone much faster than I

anticipated.

One last thought for you - it also helped me to stop and think about

my surgery and realize that there are people who have undergone much

more serious surgeries with very successful outcomes (e.g. heart

bypass, organ transplants). A former colleague/friend of mine had a

liver transplant due to cancer just a couple months ago. And, my

younger sister was diagnosed with a (supposedly benign) brain tumor

a few months ago, and will likely undergo biopsy surgery in the next

few months. Thinking about these individuals' situations helped me

realize that while I was facing major surgery, it really did pale in

comparison to what these dear people are facing. Just food for

thought.

Best wishes to you - think positive! Realize that YOU are in

control of how you can prepare for your surgery and react to your

situation. I'm sure you'll do well!

My gyn is Christenson in Detroit Lakes, MN he works

out of the womens clinic through Dakota Clinic. He is excellent--

very caring, understanding, and easy to make himself understood

as doesnt use all the medical jargon. I was very leary at first as

had never been to a male dr in my life, but am extremely happy

to have him as my doc.

I had myo surgery with Dr. Glassner last year this time with excellent

results. My biggest problems revolved around travel between Florida and

Philly 2 weeks post 9/11.

I am happy to chat with anyone having surgery with him (the only experience

I've had) on the phone or through private email). I don't read all the

posts here all the time, so I might not respond to a specific questions if

posted here.
