Hi,

Is there any reason to avoid a colonoscopy while chelating?

My grandfather died of colon cancer. My father had colon cancer at 54

and had a colonostomy. I take colon cancer avoidance seriously.

I had one colonoscopy at age 44 with no issues found. Because of my

family history it's recommended that I have one every 5 years. I'm

overdue for the 2nd.

I know that the prep for the test would mean stopping supplements for

a couple of days and possibly disrupting intestinal flora (which I

have been working hard to get right because of clostridia). The

procedure itself involves sedation.

Does anyone have any opinions?

Thanks,

W.

You obviously don't want to do it during a round, but otherwise,

I can't think of any real concerns. Hopefully others will post

opinions as well.

Yes, good to track it. Especially during chelation, since

your body is under more stress than usual and things like

polyps might be more likely to develop during this time (I

have no evidence for this, but it seems a not unreasonable

notion).

I'm not sure you'd have to stop *all* supplements, except for the

period of time when you are not eating (amt of time depends on

the prep you are doing). Did the doc tell you to avoid for

longer than that?

I *would* stop any blood-thinning supplements for a few days,

just in case of a complication. Things like omega 3s, coQ10,

vit E, St 's Wort, licorice, and a few others may have

blood thinning effects. I am not aware if vitamin C is included

in this category. I think other vitamins and minerals are okay.

Medications (rx or OTC) are usually okay. Personally, I would

check with the doc about the latter, and I would research each

of the other nutritional/herbal supplements I was taking.

If you have any concern about sedation, you can ask for

minimal dosage. I did this so I could watch the TV pictures

of my colon (and remember them) :-)

No.

Good point, which I thought of after my consult with the doc today.

If they do find any polyps they will cut them out, so stopping the

blood thinners is a good idea.

He told me I could continue with the prescriptions I take, He didn't

ask about supplements and I forgot to mention them.

You are supposed to be on the full regimen of supplements for at least

a month prior to your 1st chelation. Does a day or so disruption in

supplements mean that you should wait awhile for the next round?

Thanks,

I don't have an authoritative answer to that question, but if it

were me, I would take a longer off period between rounds to recover

from the colonoscopy.

I'm thinking something like three times the usual off days. If you

usually take four days off, I would take about 4 days before the

colonoscopy to recover from the last round, and another 8 days to

have the procedure, recover from it, and get back to your normal

supplement regime. Maybe a little longer if you have any polyps

removed.

That's just an off-the-cuff idea. I haven't seen this question

addressed before. Maybe an onibasu search for something like

" chelation surgery " would turn something up?
