Guest guest
Hi Tami, I will be going down with a dear friend, who called me a couple of weeks ago and said that she wanted to be there with me. It was very touching to me because I thought I was going to have to do this alone, which I would have done. So I have one friend staying with me through the surgery until Saturday, she is leaving on Saturday and then another friend is going to stay with me Sat until I leave. I feel very blessed. I will be staying at Sommerset. Is it easy walking to the hospital? Did you take a taxi to the hotel or is there a shuttle, what is the best to do. Did they weigh you at the pre-op appointment? I know that I was told not to gain any weight and I'm afraid with water and stuff what will happen if I'm a little heavier, will they really cancel the surgery? I'm not planning on taking much with me. PJ's, sweats, I know some have said my cell phone. Will I get in trouble if I keep it, what will they do if I use it? I am so stunned that next week is it. It makes me cry to think about how long the journey has been and that the surgery is the ending of one journey and the beginning of another one. I'm sorry that you have been having some trouble. I hope that all will change for you soon and that you will be back to all the wonderful things you want to do. J'net
Guest guest
Hi J'Net, I'm not Tami, but I *do* have some answers for you. You asked about whether it is an easy walk from Sommerset to the hospital. Yes! Less than a block, practically right next door. I would take a taxi from the airport to the hotel, as (for me at least) there is often a time crunch and the people who took the shuttle were late to the pre-op class they require the day before surgery. Save the receipts from the taxi - Pacific Bariatrics reimburses you when you submit original receipts. Yes, they weigh you the day before surgery. I really don't think that anyone's surgery got canceled because/if they didn't lose enough weight. Don't worry about it! The hospital is only strict about using your cell phone if you are in intensive care on a heart monitor, which you won't be!! Don't worry - they are totally cool about people using cell phones. I brought my telephone credit card and my cell phone, but with the morphine I couldn't even come close to dialing all of the numbers on the credit card. I just used my cell phone exclusively. The nurses/aides even plugged it in to charge it for me. No one told me not to use it, and people even talked on cell phones when they were walking around the halls. Don't worry - everything will be great! Laurie W. Thanks Tami Hi Tami, I will be going down with a dear friend, who called me a couple of weeks ago and said that she wanted to be there with me. Guest guest
J'net, I am so glad someone will be there with you. I went down alone but, my sister and youngest daughter came down the day I got out. I was so happy to see my baby ( she's fifteen) I bawled right there in front of the hospital. Yippee! You are at the Summerset. It is a super easy walk. It's right next door basically. Your friend won't need to drive to the hospital at all. I am so happy for you. I took my cell phone with me and did not turn it in to security to lock up. You can have your friend with you right up until they wheel you into surgery and they can hang on to it for you. There is a hall at the end of the wing where you can use cell phones. It overlooks the front of the hospital and at night it is beautiful. They might cancel your surgery if you are more than four or five pounds over the weight you were at your marathon appt.'s. If you are over that now then you might want to try what I did. I went on a 1000 calorie diet for a week before surgery and was five pounds under where I had been the week before. You don't have to be that drastic if you don't want to though. Guest guest
Thank you so much ! I didn't think all of a sudden that I would have all of these little questions. You have made me feel better. I'm a detail person and I don't like to have too many surprises, the more I know going down there the better prepared I will feel. When taking my meds down with me, should I keep them in the bottles that they come in or is it ok to have them in the pill container marked M-t-w-th-fr-sat-sun? I dont' know if airport security looks closely at our prescriptions. Again, Thanks for all the help. All the information has been so wonderful. Guest guest
J'net: I'm not but here it is anyway- don't take your medicine out of the containers that they came in. When you get to the hospital they take your medicine and lock it up in your room and dispense it. If it is not in the original bottles, they will not give it to you. I have to agree that the Sommerset is really good and is close. When I was there in July they had a really caring staff. When the lady in the hospitality room found out that I had to be alone two of the nights after I got out of the hospital - she took me under her wing and when she saw me sitting on the patio or by the pool, she would bring me a sugar free popscyle (which they have for Bariatric patients in the freezer) and make sure that I had water. They will also drive you to the hospital and to PB for your check up before you get to come home. I don't know if they told you how it works with payment for the hotel but what they did with us is that the night before the surgery PB paid for and then also paid for the nights after the release from the hospital up until Dr Zorn released me to fly home. The days in between they charged us the same rate that PB pays since my husband stayed in the room - that way also, you can leave all of your stuff there instead of taking it to the hospital and having them store it. We were also able to buy at the store the broth, jello, tea, etc. and have it ready. My husband had also made some protein mix and froze it in little containers so that it would be ready for when I needed it. I did better in the chair sleeping then in the bed - I heard someone on this board say that you can ask for a recliner also. Hope it helps. in Vacaville -----Original Message-----From: jnetg60 Sent: Tuesday, February 10, 2004 8:00 AMTo: gastric-bypass-support-kaiser-patients Subject: Re: Thanks TamiThank you so much !I didn't think all of a sudden that I would have all of these little questions.
