Guest guest
We are so fortunate that the School for the Blind that Dylan goes to (On the same campus with School for the Deaf so he socializes with Deaf kids) is able to put all of these things together. The scary part is that the support staff, Deafblind Specialist, OT, PT, O & M, Communication etc. are awesome and are up to date on deafblind education, but the teachers themselves vary greatly in their knowledge and some work better with the support staff to learn about deafblindness than others. This year has been a good year, he is making so much progress. I hope you can find a school that puts it all together for . Guest guest
Martha, Yes we are in Tucson. I was told when Dylan was a newborn and flunked his first BAER that we were lucky to live in Tucson if we were going to have a Deaf child and I think they were right. The school is not perfect and there are always politics, but I hear of kids not getting O & M etc until after graduation and I am thankful. Dylan has had it since age 3. He has had an Intervener since age 2. At age 7 he goes off campus with the O & M to the grocery store. He rides the city bus, is learning the route, is learning traffic safety, trying to work on joint visual attention, makes choices before he goes and then shops for that item, pays his money, carries his purchase back to school etc. When he went shopping the other day he was able to get 1 or 2 of an item depending on what he was told. Since he communicates with tactile cues (now progressing to pictures) and some basic tactual sign you would not think he could do these things, but we are lucky in that this years team knows he has many concepts in his head even if he does not have language to express them yet. Just like with my other kids I think you can have a great school or a horrible school, but how the child does each year is highly dependent on the match between teacher and student.
