For a prize, I'll take one day of the dogs not pulling me on our walks. With

all the pine needles, it's getting to be a challenge. Yesterday, I ended up

falling. I had to pretend to cry to get them to behave.

One symptom I'm not sure made it on the hyper list is Onycholysis which is

separation of the nail from its bed. This condition, is said to usually

resolve spontaneously as the patient improves. It's also characterized by

uneven nail margins which allegedly make the nails difficult to clean. Has

anyone ever had this?

About separation of nails from the bed - I had it and luckily I don't

plan on taking care of my nails till the kids are out of the house

because I would have to cut my nails fairly often to get them reasonably

uniform. It was as if the nail split into 2 layers and I could peel the

upper layer off. They were also weaker in general and cracked.

About symptoms for pretreatment GD, this psychological symptom may be

included in the rest - total loss of perspective. That along with nail

problems, bouncing off the walls and constant leg tapping are ominous

signs for me! :)

Elaine, about the Dutch study - what was (were) the treatment(s) employed

for achieving remission?

And, I've been on Tapazole for several months. After my last round of

bloodwork the endo said I should come back in 3 months which is fine, I'm

feeling pretty good but in the 2 month interval between previous

appointments my TSH went up from .02 to .54 and now all my numbers are

euthyroid. Not that I'm complaining but I'm also starting to gain a lot

of weight. Now I knew I had to stop eating like a teenage boy and that

I'd have to make up the calories I no

longer expend from incessant fidgeting but I'm also wondering if 3 months

is too long. I also assume that I'll know the dangers signs of going hypo

but, here's the question: is there anything I need to know now that

someone out there wishes she'd known, or luckily did know at this point?

Thanks,

Fay Young

Hi Fay,

I had my first symptoms of hypo within days after RAI. I like to take a

nightly bubble bath, and as soon as I'd get in the water, my legs would begin

itching like crazy. I didn't make the connection right off, but as soon as I

ran a TSH it was up to 9.0. I called and got on meds then although I wasn't

even supposed to make an appt for 2-3 months. Although I felt lucky having

the lab connection, it made me very aware of how GD patients are mistreated

once we're ablated.

I only have the abstract for the Dutch article. From what it says the study

was done to assess how prevalent psychological problems are in treated

hyperthyroid patients. I'm not sure the article addresses the cure. I should

check to see if more studies have been done. I'll admit too that after RAI I

became a compulsive gambler. Before that, I never even had the patience to

stay in a casino and I would have never wasted the money. After RAI, it

seemed my need for stimulation changed.

Fay, that is interesting. My sis also had the foot tapping symptom for

years before dx'd w/ GD. We always laughed about it and thought she did it

on purpose. She would always say that she had an urge to do it and didn't

even think about it. Weird. Jen

Debbie,

I too have those ugly moles starting in the last couple of years, I wonder

if they are GD related, or come with aging?

As for the sex...I just have no interest in it anymore at all. Would rather

curl up with a good book.

I have narrow ridges that run from the base of my nail to the tip, sorta

like a wash board effect. Don't know if that would be included in it, but

thought I'd mention it.

I also have those ridges from the base to the tip of the nail. Every once in a

while I would get these " dents "

horizontally across the nails. You could add light sensitivity to the eye part

of the disease. This improves as

they get better.

He** I get hyper from any kind of over-stimulation, including telephone

calls with friends. I let the answering machine pick up all my calls, and

then space call-backs so I can calm down afterwards. I never watch

" thriller " movies.

I think stimulation of any kind can send a Graves person sky high.

I too would never think of going outside without good sunglasses. I use

eyeglasses that darken in the sun and in addition still keep sunglasses that

protect even the sides of my eyes from sun for use in the auto while driving

or when walking in the bright daylight.
