I'm wondering if the different amounts are depending on the serverity of the disease??? I think I would definately be questioning. My doctor upped my prescription for Atenolol (beta blocker) and also gave me a prescription for Tapazole. It sounds like I will be taking more of this stuff than you. I am supposed to take four Tapazole pills four times a day. The pharmacist was filling the prescription and asked me, " Can this be right? This is an awful lot. " . My whole prescription is for 300 pills (10 mg) and the pharmacy didn't have that many so they are ordering some. I noticed that taking more beta blocker definately made me feel better. The doctor also told me to go to bed for a week. Fat chance! I have to work. Your employer does NOT have the right to hold it against you. If he should, exercise your right to go on disability, but you will need your dr. to help you do that. With the dosage you are going to be taking it sure sounds like you really should go back next week to be seen by your dr. Good luck and better health. Believe me when I say I checked around thoroughly. My sister finally found it the cheapest at COSTCO...gotta love those warehouse places Anyway, yes, I am seeing an endo, my appt cost me yesterday, for the first consultation, $125, then it's $45 on each visit after that....ok you can do the math..I already told my husband we are NOT Fort Knox, we cannot keep on paying these bills! I am STILL looking at the lab work. Thank goodness my thyroid scan is paid for, had to pay cash up front for that one. I'm glad too, that you can claim medical expenses on your income tax...you KNOW I'm doing that next year, HOPEFULLY it will help! When I was first treated with T the endo started me on 3 a day (10mg) and then after a few weeks upped it to 6 a day (3 in AM - 3 in PM) for at least a few months. I, too was concerned that this was way too much, and did some research and found that the dosages for treatment can range between 15mg to 60mg. so I was at the top and it worked!! Then we reduced the dosage and eventually added Synthroid. So don't worry you are fine at that dosage!! Hope this makes you feel better. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any other questions. It does sound high, and I would ask him if he has had other patients on this high a dose and what does he base this decision on, meaning what documentation or whatever he got this idea from. Also check with the NGDF and ask what they know about this size dosage. E-mail one of the facilitators or and they can check it out for you. Maybe Jewls is on to something about the severity of the disease determining how much you take. I would definitely check on this and also ask how long he plans to wait before testing you again to see if your levels have changed. Let us know what you find out. The nurse told me that it was because my case was so severe. So apparently they do vary the amount of medication by the severity of the case. I was wondering because the pharmacist kept saying their must be some kind of mistake! It must be horrible not to have insurance. My prescription for Tapazole was for 300 - 10 mg tablets and it cost me $42 (with insurance). How much are those suckers without insurance? You need to ask the doctor if it makes which one of the antithyroid pills you take (since the other ones are less expensive). Are you going to an endocrinologist? The doctor did not have my lab results yesterday but he diagnosed by with Graves just based on the physical exam I guess. He kept making me drink water and swallow while feeling of my neck. I was just wondering what kind of symptoms you were having that let you know that something was wrong. My whole body (mostly hands and legs) shakes pretty violently. The nurse told me that it was because my case was so severe (my whole body shakes pretty badly). Even the pharmacist thought it was a mistake. The increased dose of my beta block seems to be helping. The doctor plans to see me in two weeks ( he wanted to see me next week, but I get in trouble for missing work). I have read about it on the other BB (NGDF) and one person whose husband works at the social security office confirmed it...after she asked HIM about it and he checked on it. Go there and type in " disability " on the search engine there and see what you come up with. I will also try to find the e-mail someone else sent me that they are receiving disability because of their GD. I do know it is a Temporary Disability, not long term. One had 100 pills for apx. $61 and the other showed 270 pills for $172. Sounds sort of heavy without insurance.. By the way have you checked with your doctor for organizations or ways to obtain assistance in getting your perscription??? Just out of curiousity, I called my doctor and asked her about the " usual " dosage for Tapazole. She looked it up in something called the PDR (?), and *it* said the maximum dosage per day is 60 mg. But she said that's just what the PDR says, and you should double check with your doctor (which you did) and your pharmacist (which you did). And my doc isn't an endocronologist, so... Anyway, just thought I'd try to be helpful. My doctor's very available for questions...and I think I bug her a lot, but she doesn't seem to mind. I found the web site for Tapazole and it said that the maximum dose a day was 80 mg (only for severe cases). I live in NJ and I have been on temporary state disability two times due to graves and hashi's. I had no problems with my doc submitting info and was able to collect for a few months each time with out difficulty. Check into your state disability plan. ANd by all means let your doc know that you are too shaky and wiped out to work. I am a nurse and I was unable to work for more than four hours at a time. Also I had the shakes so bad with the Graves that it was not safe to handle the babes in the nursery. With the Hashis I was too wiped out all the time and in such terrible pain that I couldn't work either until my levels straightened out. Believe me this problem is definitely a disability.
