Guest guest
The following appeared in my Diabetes in Control newsletter today: Item 7 Blood Glucose Self-Monitoring Improves Metabolic Control in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is associated with better quality of metabolic control than conventional recommendations alone in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus http://diabetes.c.topica.com/maab4zqaa5pdma6lQCgb/ If I read it correctly...it's saying that testing 6 times a day improves BG control. Duh! And they had to do a study to figure this out??? Vicki, who has advocated for frequent testing for a Long Time and wonders how much this study cost... Guest guest
It was also found that those who frequently test also tend to get hypoglycemic more often, and gain about 10 pounds (probably from frequent hypoglycemia and eating carbs until stabilizing). So while frequent testing may be great for some people, it may be less so for others. blithe > The following appeared in my Diabetes in Control newsletter today: > > Item 7 > Blood Glucose Self-Monitoring Improves Metabolic Control in Patients > With Type 2 Diabetes > Self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is associated with better > quality of metabolic control than conventional recommendations alone in > patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus > http://diabetes.c.topica.com/maab4zqaa5pdma6lQCgb/ > > If I read it correctly...it's saying that testing 6 times a day improves > BG control. > > Duh! > > And they had to do a study to figure this out??? > > Vicki, who has advocated for frequent testing for a Long Time and > wonders how much this study cost... Guest guest
The hypoglycemia mentioned isn't caused by frequent testing, however; it's because people who are frequent testers are generally trying for " tight control, " i.e. blood sugars in a very limited range. An " official " hypo is anything under 65, and I have been between 55 and 65 fairly often with no negative consequences at all. Also, frequent testing doesn't cause weight gain, nor does insulin. The weight gain you incorrectly postulate as being caused by food taken to correct low BGs could be easily avoided by taking glucose tablets instead of food to bring BGs up to normal. Vicki, who has been following tight control for 5+ years now with no weight gain and occasional benign hypos and has no complications Re: This is news? > It was also found that those who frequently test also tend to get > hypoglycemic more often, and gain about 10 pounds (probably from > frequent hypoglycemia and eating carbs until stabilizing). > > So while frequent testing may be great for some people, it may be > less so for others. > > blithe > > > The following appeared in my Diabetes in Control newsletter today: > > > > Item 7 > > Blood Glucose Self-Monitoring Improves Metabolic Control in Patients > > With Type 2 Diabetes > > Self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is associated with better > > quality of metabolic control than conventional recommendations > alone in > > patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus > > http://diabetes.c.topica.com/maab4zqaa5pdma6lQCgb/ > > > > If I read it correctly...it's saying that testing 6 times a day > improves > > BG control. > > > > Duh! > > > > And they had to do a study to figure this out??? > > > > Vicki, who has advocated for frequent testing for a Long Time and > > wonders how much this study cost...
