All I can offer is what doctors placed me on. At first, when they

thought it was a wear-and-tear type problem, it was very high doses

of ibuprofen. Then I was switched to Celebrex. When they determined

it was cancer, there was no longer any concern about addiction. I was

given large doses of morphine and - yes - methadone. (I had thought

methadone was used only in drug clinics, to get people off heroin.)

There is no " maximum dose " of morphine or methadone. The problems you

face with increasing doses are severe constipation and signs of

overdose, such as drooling and incoherence. Driving and other tasks

requiring alertness are not recommended, and stool softeners and

laxatives must be prescribed. I keep careful records, to share with

the Hospice nurse.

With chronic pain, it can also be important to have something to

relieve the stress of the pain. When things get too bad, I take

Lorazepam, which allows me to stop hyperventilating and stops the

tremors and muscle cramping which keep me awake. Once I experience an

uncontrolled bout of pain, I then become fearful of falling asleep,

and so I develop insomnia.

I sleep in my own wing of the house, where I can phone my husband at

night when things get bad. He brings me a cold, wet washcloth for my

forehead, asks me about my pain meds, and rubs my legs to work on the

muscle cramping and tremors. I also have an air blower with a 50'

hose and cannula (it can also be attached to oxygen tanks for

portable use). The extra air helps a lot to relax me when the pain

gets bad.

(This isn't a referral to a group, as much as it is a note about how

I deal with pain, in the hopes it may offer you some insights.)

My Doc gave me a flyer showing several exercises and perhaps your Doc might

have something like this too.

No, but I can heartily recommend a book:

Look on bestbookbuys.com, and you'll see used copies starting at around

$14 incl s/h.

This is an entire book of yoga " relaxation poses " , making use of various

props such as bolsters, pillows, folded blankets, straps, etc. It is

very well written and illustrated, showing how to get into the pose,

what to focus on when you're there, and how to get out of it safely.

This kind of yoga is being taught at most yoga centers as " Restorative

Yoga " . It is low-key enough that even I can do it (and I have CFIDS,

fibromyalgia, migraines, asthma, arthritis, etc. in addition to diabetes).

NAYY...just love the book.
