Guest guest
hi louann, My son " s slp is using the Kauffman for therapy. She told me that it targets specific sounds and groups of specific sounds. There is easy sounds(single sounds such as consonents and vowels) to specific combinations of sounds. For instance she gave words like baby, people, turtle. These are 2 syalble words that the kauffman says to do next. She accepts approximations of the words. This is another thing Kauffman does, it allows for approximations. so for turtle she accepts tutl. I like it a lot because its organized and good for practice of specific words but the slp has to be organized and do it everyday so the child can master the words and go on to next step. Its hard for her because she has a big case load( she works in his school). I hope I explained it right. Just a question why is your slp asking YOU why questions? Doesn't she have a superior that can help her. She is suppose to help you. hope this helped chris Lay <layfamily5@...> wrote: Hi Everyone, My daughter's SLP ordered the Kaufman Assesment Test and Kit 1 in order to find out how to better help her. She's more than willing to do whatever it takes to see Hannah have success, she just wants to understand the " whys " regarding her therapy. He is now 3.3years old and let me tell you he has made TREMENDOUS progress. I'm almost to the point that I don't worry about him and his speech. (Well, as much.) He started therapy with only about 5 word approximations and he is now speaking in 4 to 5 word sentences. His therapist actually worked side by side with until moving to Ga. She is well trained with apraxia and she and my son's neurologist gave him the diagnosis of mild to moderate. She even had extra kits for me to " borrow " and use at home so I didn't have to purchase them myself. But if I knew then what I know now I definetly would have!! I'm not saying these kits are miracles. She uses play therapy techniques as well and lots of hard work on me and my husband as well but Cameron has come a long way and I feel the Kaufman program definelty contributed to his success. Why? I'm not really quite sure. ( I know that's not the answer you are looking for ) The cards break down words with certain patterns to the child's level. For example, I can remember for the longest time Cameron not being able to say " open " so for quite a while we would say " o pah. " We would say it that way to him and also the correct way. He later was able to correct it. This is how most of the words have gone for Cameron. He still can not say the G or K or C sounds but subsitutes the T sound for them. I know one day too he will correct them as well. I could talk all day about these kits and this therapy. We actually are getting ready for therapy now. PLEASE feel free and e-mail me privately if you wish and I could tell you more and give you some insite to what my son's therapist says. Good luck to you, your therapist, and especilly your daughter! Guest guest
She accepts approximations of the words. This is another thing Kauffman does, it allows for approximations. This could totally be because is deaf, has a CI (cochlear implant) and thus a hearing impairment along w/ apraxia and other things...and I know these approximations are " big " in the world of apraxia but I just wanted to say that we did try it and it totally confused . So we trudge along on trying to get him to say thing properly or use other words to get the correct sounds that do have correct pronounciation.
