Janet,

How long has he been on Atkins?

When going low-carb (Atkins, Bernstein, etc), bg's improve pretty

quickly (usually).

My experience and that of others on that regimen is that cholesterol

improves too, but much more slowly. It seems to take 3 months or so of

serious low-carbing for cholesterol to change.

As an example, my cholesterol was 230mg/dl after years of low-fat

eating, and 3 months after starting Bernstein it was 155mg/dl. Good

cholesterol increased, bad lowered, and all the ratios they calculate

improved into " normal " ranges.

It doesn't work for everyone, but it's worth waiting a while to see

what happens to his cholesterol on Atkins. Patience!

I've got Bernstein's new book, but confess to not reading it yet!

, T2, DX'ed 4/98, controlling with LC, average bg 100mg/dl, last

HbA1c 5.6%

I do not know about the Bernstein and changes. I doubt it changed as I got the

new one and it seems Atkins like to me.

Try S Beach and see which one works best. I have friends who have had great

diabetic success on it. I had diabetic success last week on W/W points and low

carb choices. G

That is interesting that a diabetic did well on SBD. It is so high carb

compared to Atkins. The SBD loves fruits. Bernstein and Atkins hold up crossed

fingers to them!

We will see what the next blood test tells. Bill has added cinnamon to his

coffee as that is supposed to help with cholesterol--maybe I read that on this

list? I forgot. He is also taking Zitia so hopefully we can remain on Atkins.

It is such an easy diet and you don't have to eat all that yucky non-fat

salad dressing! I hate that. Give me blue cheese anyday!

Sorry I forgot to change my subject line on my last post from the digest. :-(

DH, Bill 4.9 HbAlc low carbing

Several of my diabetic friends have done wonderfully well on the South Beach. It

is not about fruit. It is still low carb but not as low as atkins and is lower

fat as well. G
