Guest guest
I have a question. Are Borderlines in bad moods most of the time? Is that a characteristic? I don't remember reading that anywhere? So, I am wondering if any other parents have experienced this. My daughter is in a rotten mood 95% of the time. Usually bites off my head about everything. At the present time, her finances are not that great, so she is being a bit more pleasant, probably so if she needs assistance, she thinks I will come to her rescue. And I know if I don't assist her, there will be _ell to pay.

This whole area of personality disorders is relatively new. Historically: 1980 - BPD first appeared in the DSM (the psychiatrist's bible). 1989 - Kreisman's book " I Hate You - Don't Leave Me " was the first book published for the lay public. It appeared in 1989. 1998 - " Stop Walking On Eggshells " (SWOE), the 'bible' for these WelcomeToOz lists, was published in 1998. SWOE was co-authored by the Randi Kreger, the owner of the WelcomeToOz Family of NonBP Email Support Groups. There is also an accompanying Workbook (SWOEW, 2002) that we highly recommend. For info on SWOE and SWOEW go to: http://www.bpdcentral.com/books/swoe.shtml http://www.bpdcentral.com/books/swoe_workbook.shtml Also, there's a booklet on the BPDCentral.com website titled " Hope for Parents: Helping Your Borderline Son or Daughter Without Sacrificing Your Family Or Yourself. " The URL for more info is at: http://www.bpdcentral.com/bks/hope.shtml Besides SWOE and SWOEW, other books you may want to read include (some may be available through your local library): - " I'M NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE: My Recovery From BPD " by Reiland, a recovered BP. For more info and how to order, go to: http://www.bpdcentral.com/books/supposed.shtml - " LOST IN THE MIRROR: An Inside Look at Borderline Personality Disorder " by A. Moskowitz, MD. This is a self-help book for BPs. It is available in bookstores or it may be ordered through BPDCentral at: http://www.bpdcentral.com/books/more_books.shtml - " ECLIPSES: Behind the borderline personality disorder: DBT therapy from the patient's viewpoint. " And I believe there is a link on BPD Central to the www site of the publisher. - " THE ANGRY HEART: Overcoming Borderline and Addictive Disorders " , by ph Santoro, Cohen, ph Santoro PhD. ISBN: 1572240806. Websites of interest: For an overview of BPD go to: http://www.borderlinedisorders.com/public.htm The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) website on BPD is at: http://www.nimh.nih.gov/publicat/bpd.cfm To read " The Borderline Dance & The Non-Borderlines' Dilemma " by AJ Mahari, a recovered BP and owner of the BorderPD list, go to: http://www.mental-health-matters.com/articles/article.php?artID=511 Therapy: Not all therapists are trained to work with BPs and/or their family members but there are different therapies that do work. For info on " How To Choose A BPD Therapist " , go to: http://www.bpdcentral.com/resources/therapist/main.shtml DBT is not the only therapy that can help but you can perhaps learn from some of the URLs that follow. - DIALECTIC BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (DBT) is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D. at the University of Washington that has been successfully used to treat people who have BPD. The BP, however, must WANT to change in order for this therapy to work. Like SWOE, DBT is geared to high-functioning BPs who are young (teens to mid-40s). For an overview of DBT go to: http://www.priory.co.uk/dbt1.htm - DBT SKILLS TRAINING is usually carried out in a group context by someone other that the individual therapist. In the skills training groups, patients are taught skills considered relevant to the particular problems experienced by people with borderline personality disorder. There are four modules focusing in turn on four groups of skills: Core mindfulness skills Interpersonal effectiveness skills Emotion modulation skills Distress tolerance skills Questions that can be asked in seeking a BPD-knowledgable/trained DBT therapist are listed on pages 238-239 of SWOE. To locate a DBT-trained therapist in your area, see the phone number listed on the following website: http://www.brtc.psych.washington.edu Also, Behavioral Technology Transfer Group (BTTG) in Seattle WA has a list of clinicians who have completed Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) training with their company. You can send an email request for referral to a DBT-trained therapist in your area to: DBTinfo@... The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) maintains a list of therapists who treat BPD; their hotline number is 800-950-NAMI. Also NAMI has local groups that one can attend. And, finally, The National Education Alliance for Borderline Personality Disorder (NEABPD) runs 15-week programs specifically for NonBPs. The course teaches the NonBP how to use DBT.
