Guest guest
Well, hmmmmm I'll have to do a little more reading on this. I was undiagnosed for at least five years, during which time I was not overweight. Then my eyes went completely nuts on me and I couldn't work anymore because flourescent lights burned me. So then I spent 18 months seeing 12 doctors in the context of a worker's comp case - all of the doctors agreed that my eye problems could not arise other than in an industrial setting. None of the doctors ever even pricked my finger. Comp case settled. They can't have the money back. I went home to stay out of flourescent lights for about a year, gaining weight the whole time, and then a periodontist told me I probably had diabetes and should be tested. Prior to dx I lost 30 lbs. for no reason, had plenty of neuropathy symptoms - etc. The point here is that the weight gain was a result of inactivity and too much food, the diabetes was well under way before the weight gain. I tried to find some info on this GAD test, but it all came up some kind of anxiety disorder - is that right? Guest guest
No, GAD has nothing to do with anxiety, Carol. It stands for glutamic acid decarboxylase. If you do a google and put in " GAD test diabetes " (without the quotes) you'll get lots of hits. Here's a link to one of them. http://www.ohiohealth.com/healthreference/reference/B444170C-26F6-49DF-92AC12B7A\ 858173C.htm?category=9720 When I had it done, the results made it abundantly clear that I was LADA type 1. Lab normal was 0.00 to 1.45 and mine came back 34.28. Vicki Re: Shock/LADA > > Well, hmmmmm I'll have to do a little more reading on this. Guest guest
I found it. Thanks, Vicki. I also found an article in Diabetes Health talking about LADA and Type 1.5 being different. I think my history - at least as of the time of dx - actually looks more like 1.5, but as you said before, now that I'm on insulin there may be no point in investigating this any further. My darlin' doctor has already refused a C-peptide test, and I'm sure if I asked for something as esoteric as a GAD antibody test he would start yelling at me again. So, I'm seeing him on 12/8, and don't want to upset him until after I've got a script for Humalog in my hot little hand. THEN I'll insult the h out of him, and start making appointments with different docs at the clinic. Actually, that won't work either. Diabetes patients are only seen on Wednesday, and guess who's on duty on Wed???? Yep, Dr. Dummy Dodo. CarolR whimsy2 wrote: > No, GAD has nothing to do with anxiety, Carol. Guest guest
Carol, see if you can find some kind of research study that would give you all the test results you need. That's how I got my C-peptides. My doctor wouldn't order them even though I said I'd be paying for them. Gretchen
