Guest guest
Hi, Patty...I'm sorta sorry to see that your doctor put you on a combination medication (Avandia and Metformin) because Avandia is one of those sulfs that can cause unexpected lows and I'm sure you'd rather not have to deal with those. Oh, well, since your doc prescribed it, give it a fair try. But watch out for lows. If you feel in the least bit " strange " check your BG. You should carry your meter with you at all times. Buy some glucose tabs and have them with available at all times too. Each one will raise your BG about 20 points so if you go low (below 70) take 1 or 2, whatever it takes to get back into safe territory. And if you're going to exercise, test first to make sure you're not too low, because exercise -- even a 20-minute walk -- will make your BGs go down. However, I'm very glad you don't have one of those doctors who considers the internet a dangerous place to get some of your diabetes education. Don't be surprised if your diabetes class teaches you the standard ADA exchange program diet. This is a very high carb plan and actually works against good BG control for most people, but it's what most classes teach. You can give it a try, but I think you'd do much better by cutting down on high GI carbs. Have you checked out Mendosa's website yet? The url is www.mendosa.com I'm glad your husband can return to work. Please do keep us posted on your progress. Vicki, LADA .. Guest guest
Oops...I goofed. Avandia is NOT a sulf! 'scuse me! Guest guest
No avandia is not a sulf; however all the other advice is timely. There is still a possibility of lows and that will have to be watched. When did he tell you to take the medication? Helen
Guest guest
Helen The doctor said to take it twice a day one in the morning and one at night of the Avandamet 2mg/1000mg. Patti aka patti_cakes70
Guest guest
So you will be taking all told 4mg of avandia and 2000mg of metformin? You should see a slight change from both these meds fairly quickly, but the real effect needs time to build up; perhaps as much as six weeks. Be patient. At first, if metformin is new to you, take it just after your meal, breakfast and dinner. The morning dose can be moved thru the meal until it winds up before eating. The evening dose can be slowly moved back to bedtime. This should mitigate any digestive problems. I surely hope these meds make a difference in your numbers!
