Guest guest
Hi, I am also from Long Island. As ar as services being better than Florida, perhaps in the EI program, the services are good but once you get into the school system which I know we are paying $5600 just in school taxes, leaves alot to be desired. I don't know what school district you are in, but I know in mine unless your child is severely delayed, they aren't too willing to come up with the services, just try to get them to do an evaluation without calling the principal is an issue. I requested and speech eval done on my son twice, and it was never done. I finally (which I should have done) a long time ago, went thru our health insurance. Got approval immediately for therapy, evaluation done was at least an hour long. I know another mother who requested in writing 3 times for an evaluation and finally went ballistic in pricipals office, (really wasn't his fault, he didn't know how irresponsible speech therapist had been) Speech therapist did an evaluation 5 MINUTES in length in the hallway! Some evaluation, she never even got a phone call or any notification on the results, so much for Long Island schools. So you must check your own individual school district some are better than others, I know mine leaves alot to be desired. Ask other parents in your district how responsive they are, Long Island schools as a whole can not be judged as great just because we pay the highest taxes in the country, doesn't mean squat if your child wont get the help he/she needs.Good luck. Guest guest
Hello I am in Pinellas county just north of Sarasota. There are 2 members that I know of that are satisfied & getting better services than we are in this county. You might want to jump on the FL apraxia list, a lot of good information shared there also. Guest guest
Hi, this is in reply to the girl from Long Island whose child is going to a language based school. What school is it? I just checked out North Shore Speech and Language in Hicksville. My severly delayed global dyspraxia girl who is attending pre school is definitely getting the wrong services. This school suggested going into the Kindergarten in March when she turns five. She will then be able to stay in this school until next Sept. 2005. It is a developmental 10-1-2 class. They said even thoough she can't read, and other children can, they will start from where she is at. ANy advice? Thanks LD
Guest guest
Florida's services are pretty much nonexistent, so yes Long Island is better. What school district are you in? It doesn't seem they are following proper procedure. If you ask for an evaluation they HAVE to do it. You talk about the principal but he/she should have nothing to do with it. Doesn't your district have a CSE/CPSE. That is who you should be calling. If your child got EI and you contacted your school district that he was aging out you should have gotten an evaluation. Your EI coordinator should have helped you with that. You may not be happy with Long Island services but if you started researching other states as we have you will see that we don't have it so bad. In South Carolina what they consider Early Intervention is an Early Interventionist ( don't know what there credentials are) come into the house once a week and address the child's issues, weather it is speech, PT or OT. It's the same person. They don't even provide you with correct specialists. If you believe that your child is not getting services he or she needs I suggest you request meeting with the CSE/CPSE. They is a Long Island Advocate organization that will help fight for your child rights. I will try and get you the number. I had it at one time but not sure where I put it. Good Luck! Guest guest
Also if you had a private speech eval done and they are recommending therapy, use it. Bring it to the meeting. Are you in Nassau of Suffolk? How old is your child?
