Terry you dont want the ketone stix to go past moderate that is the

best place to be to dark means your dehydrated and not haveing enough

fluids as for you diet coke they are legal. Try subtracting a salad a

day and only have a small one. Sue

Having a diet Coke is NOT cheating. I know everyone keeps saying you have

to have all this water, but Atkins himself said in " Dr. Atkins Diet

Revolution " that you should have all the liquids you want as long as they

are no carb. He says you DON'T need to force fluids, just drink what you

feel comfortable with. I'm not sure where people keep getting this bit that

you have to drink tons of water, but that is usually the requirement on

other diets, and as we all know, Atkins is way different from other diets!

Another thing is that people keep saying you should not be getting dark

purple on the sticks, that a trace is better. Well, this is directly from

Atkins again: " Usually the deeper the purple shown on the Ketostix, the

less the hunger. The paler the color shown on the Ketostix, the more the

possibility of hunger. However, you will find which shade of purple

correlates best with your own feeling, and this, for you, is the ideal. " He

also says, " The time of day you test makes a difference. One day a week

test your urine right through the day - morning, midday, evening, night.

Find out which hour of the day gives you the deepest reaction. (Usually

it's in the evening.) If that's the time that gives you the deepest

reaction, then that's the time you should check.

As long as the test stick shows some degree of purple or lavendar, you're

all right. But any day in which you go from a deep purple to a light shade

or to no change of color at all (beige) is a day in which you've had more

carbohydrates than you should have. "

Ok, that was direct from the horses mouth. Nothing about how it shouldn't

be deep purple because that means you aren't drinking enough water.

Hi Sue,

I've been on the diet a month and have lost 10 pounds. More

importantly my enery level (I didn't even have one before!) has

dramatcially increased. I feel good. My moods are very even

and I sleep so much better.

I lost a lot of weight about 5 years ago on an almost no-fat

diet that was very low in calories and not adequate in protein.

Needless to say, I gained it back. Every time I have tried to

go back to that way of eating, I've wanted to gag and have

never been able to last more than maybe a week.

Atkins feels like this is how I can live for the rest of my life.

I'm not hungry and satisfied with the meals and how creative I

can get with the food. For me, this is it!

Regards,

Polly

Nita,

I'm not discounting anything Dr. Atkins has to say. He just doesn't seem

to talk about the dangers of excessive ketones. This was brought to my

attention by my pharmacist and I did some research. I just want to get the

word out that he doesn't talk about high ketone levels and their dangers.

Here is some info. I found on the net to help make my point.

I believe in this diet. I think it is a safe diet as long as you are

sensible and know what you are doing and why your body is producing ketones.

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is one of the most serious acute complications of

diabetes. DKA occurs when the blood level of insulin falls far below the

body's needs. Low insulin means that glucose cannot nourish cells throughout

the body. The blood glucose level soars, and tissues throughout the body

become starved for glucose. To prevent cell death from starvation, the body

breaks down fat for energy. Chemicals called ketones are a byproduct of this

process. Ketones are acids that build up in the blood. As ketone levels rise,

they poison the body. They also spill into urine, stimulating the kidneys to

increase urine production, which causes dehydration, and in severe cases,

difficulty breathing, coma, and possibly death. The combination of high blood

glucose, high blood ketones, and dehydration is DKA.

In addition, DKA also causes:

Classic signs of high blood glucose (hyperglycemia): intense thirst, dry

mouth, and frequent urination

A fruity odor on the breath

Loss of appetite

Stomach pains

Nausea and possibly vomiting

Blurred vision

Fever

Dry, flushed skin

Difficulty breathing

Weakness

Sleepiness

FYI: I belong to another Atkins list that is for nurses only.. so don't

think we all condemn this diet... :-) Right now.,,,, I think the risks

of being on the diet (if any) certainly are worth taking to lose the

weight.. Obesity is a bigger risk. However, I am afraid to mention the

diet to our hospital dietician because I feel these ppl are " brainwashed " .

when I see docs prescribe lowfat diets to our pts. I feel like screaming....

hehe

So, even when people display signs of acidosis (like fruity breath, nausea,

loss of appetite) it really isn't? What are these things attributed to then?

Can you give me the pages in the book...I need to re-read them. I will

absorb better this time around since I am actually living the diet.

Yes. And DKA is not the same as ketosis induced from a low carb

diet eaten by a person who is not a Type I diabetic. DKA is

something Type I diabetics must avoid. However, a " normal "

person on a low carb diet will not have high blood glucose and

will not be dehydrated. Since these are two components of DKA,

benign dietary ketoisis is NOT the same thing.

That's what I always shoot for. If I've had a bit too much veggie with my

meals, I go right back to trace. When I stick to mainly meat and cheese, I

can usually get back up to moderate, and I do feel better when it's there,

too. Definitely less hungry.

Hi Beth,

I am brand new to onelist and to the Atkins wol. As a matter of fact I

start tomorrow!!

Reading your message gave me extra incentive to get going, you have done

great so far!

You must be very proud and excited. I'm a little worried about getting used

to what I can

and can't eat and how to cook them. Can you eat the skin on the chicken or

is it better to have boneless, skinless breast?

Just thought maybe you could help me out alittle. Look forward to talking to

you.

Dear Ree,

I'm still in shock at how easy this woe is. I'm so glad your planning on

using it. As for the chicken skin go right ahead and enjoy it. I never

liked it much before and still don't eat it. I'm in the process of modifying

the way I cook now. Tonight I made a beef soup. Instead of using macaroni's

I used spinach in it. I also eliminated the potatoes and didn't miss them at

all. It was delicious. Do you guys post recipes? I'm getting a little sick

of sugar free Jell-O for dessert. Any suggestions would be welcomed. Good

luck with induction Ree--it won't be half as hard as you think it will.

Drink water!!!!!

Welcome to the list kiddo! 18 pounds is a wonderful start, and you'll get

some great tips here. My best tip ......pork rinds. You can almost

convince yourself they're potato chips, and i experimented with pounding up

a bunch to bread chicken with and it was awesome.

good luck!
