,

I believe you posted a few days ago regarding Cod Liver Oil and the

affect it has on the effectiveness of Pro EFA - would you mind

giving me the links/studies about this. I had no idea and of course

have the twins on both. I wanted to educate our DAN people (and

myself - can't believe that there is yet another thing I did not

know - ugh!!!!)

, thanks for asking this! I too wanted to tell the autistic

groups since CLO is so important for Megson's theory. In fact, I was

just told to up the CLO for my son and this time I'm not doing it

and going on a hunch that ProEFA worked initially and to try it

again. There are a small group of ASD children who have improved as

my son has, yet still have no speech and the parents are puzzled as

I am. I'm thinking given todays results I may be able to help. I

don't want to speak to soon as we have lost our gains this way

before. So far there is a noteable difference today, noted by

another person unaware of the change in supplements.

Hi and all!

None of this is an exact science yet -just strong anecdotal.

This is a cut and paste of the recent archive to Lynn -and I've

brought this up many times in the archives prior:

" Also I know you started to explore other nutritional techniques

through the autism boards, many which suggesting including cod liver

oil -which most don't realize changes the EFA formula to raise the

Omega 3 even higher over the Omega 6 thereby perhaps making the EFAs

less or ineffective. More is not always better. "

Don't get me wrong, cod liver oil is great, and healthy, and has a

long history with children being spoon-fed daily with it for

generations in many areas of the world. There are many benefits and

no harm that will come from giving your child cod liver oil that I

know of, unless your child is getting too much Vitamin A from the

cod liver oil together with other supplements that also contain

Vitamin A. Unlike fish oils made from other parts of the fish, fish

oil made from the liver of the fish naturally contains Vitamin A

which may be what some are looking for, and what some don't want.

Many fish oils are not made from the liver of the fish so do not

contain Vitamin A. ProEFA, Efalex and EyeQ for example are just

three of the brand names.

In my opinion from anecdotal reports and observations over the

years, all that matters with EFA supplementation are

Formula

Dosage

Quality of the oils

When you give a child both cod liver oil together with ProEFA you

change both the formula and the dosage. When the Omega 3, mainly

the DHA in most cases, is raised too high over the Omega 6/GLA (the

small amount of primrose or borage seed oil) the EFAs are reported

to no longer " work " . For some reason the exception to this rule has

been raising the EPA (most have reported using ProEPA -and have

reported surges)

For mild to severe, speech delayed, apraxic, or PDD children, and

mild to moderate autistic children (not sure for those with severe

autism) it appears you want to continue to stay as close as you can

to the same formula that works even if you increase the dosage.

Again the only exception to this is the EPA.

Please just run all this by the MDs working with your child prior to

lowering or stopping the cod liver oil to only give your child the

one Omega 3 and Omega 6 formula, so that they too can see the surge

that happens when you do this. It happens to often to be

coincedental -so has to be a formula problem.

I also highly suggest watching the movie Lorenzo's Oil to understand

in a basic way the power of oil therapy/formula in general. Dr.

Hugo Moser who led the trials for Lorenzo's Oil (and was featured in

the movie) was our dinner speaker at The First Apraxia Conference,

and was so excited about what was reported by our findings that he

urged us not to wait -to " begin research immediately! "

Research..we wish. For now - try it and let us know what you observe!

Hi, . I recognize your ID from the autism/DAN sites! I

guess there are a lot of cross overs.

I find all of this EFA stuff so interesting and confusing. I have

been giving Ian CLO for the past 6 months. I use Carlson's which I

buy on the Mercola website. For those of you who don't go there,

www.mercola.com is a wealth of info with its own search engine for

great articles on meds/health/food/etc.

Now I see I might be lacking the GLA. I always had the idea that we

get way too many Omega 6/9s in our diet and the 3s are what we

should focus on. Last night I bought Nordic Naturals liquid

recommended on Cherab's site. We'll see. I happen to have a child

who happily takes the stuff right off the spoon!

On the very positive side... Ian is really starting to mimic what we

say. My DH brought him down this morning and said, " Here's mommy!

WOW! " Ian said " wow! " . I nearly cried. I am still at the stage

where any new words puts tears in my eyes. Perhaps that doesn't go

away.

Off to wrestle the kids out of their pjs. They seem to think it is

Saturday already!
