Well, it isn't really that high. Label reading is so important here. If you're using jarred sauces, there are many manufacturers, and some are much lower than others in carbs. Many of the commercial, cheap sauces have a lot of added sweetener - often in the form of high fructose corn syrup. The more expensive brands tend to have less, if any, and often have just 7 or 8 grams of carbs per half cup. Label reading is very important - for serving sizes and carbs per serving and for ingredients. I much prefer to get my carbs from the tomatoes themselves than from high fructose corn syrup!!! Tomatoes themselves are higher in carbs than say, cauliflower, but they're not all that high. A cup of tomatoes has about 8 grams of carbs, a cup of cauliflower has 5 grams. Let your meter be your guide. Mix the tomato sauce with meat and veggies, etc. As for the pasta, try to find shiratke noodles - a refrigerated asian noodle available in some places - they're made of japanese yam flour and have only a carb or two per serving.
