Sure, if your BG goes high enough, you can go into a coma and die. In one

day, however? No, I don't think so

I'm reading a (very good) book where the plot hinges on a diabetic

going into a coma and dying because he didn't get his insulin shot on

time, i.e. within a 24-hour period. (He was in a hostage situation).

And just yesterday I had a conversely similar situation: I was at a

restaurant and had ordered my meal only to discover that I'd forgotten

my insulin. I elected to eat the meal then rush home and take the shot,

which happened, about 25 minutes after the meal ended. I then went out

to do some errands. Came back an hour later to find panicky phone calls

from friends who were worried about my condition and were ready to call

paramedics in case I'd gone into coma, which obviously I had not.

I have NEVER heard of anyone going into a coma from NOT taking insulin

but apparently this is a commonly misunderstood fact.. In the case of

the book, I was truly shocked that an author would not have researched

this more thoroughly before basing a whole novel on that premise.

On the other hand, maybe I'm the one with the misunderstanding.

What I need to know is, can someone actually go into coma and die from

not taking insulin when they're insulin-dependent diabetics?

Oops, sorry, faulty memory . . . the movie I meant to refer to (that I

disliked intensely due to the characterization of a T1 diabetic) was " Steel

Magnolias " (not " Fried Green Tomatoes " ).

Thank you, Fried Green Tomatoes was one of my favorite movies and I was

scratching my

head to remember anything about a diabetic in it. I have a bad memory but.......
