The difference is that fish oil has the Omega 3 broken down and flax seed does

not. If your child has a problem with the essential enzyme (D6D) then, flax

seed will do only minimal good. Fish oil is the best bet with children who

suffer from apraxia. I would also make sure the GLA is in the product you have

for your child.

I am new to the group. My name is Lynn Sherwood. I am a neurodevelopmental

educationalist. We are in the process of launching our ministry to learning

disabled children. I do not consider myself a final expert. I joined this

does anybody know what is the difference? I just read on another

board the flexseed oil does have the omega 3 fatty acid in it too. I

am confused now. Is it the same as the fish oil (I started my

daughter on ultimate omega complete omega)? Does it have the same

affect?

Hope all are enjoying the day -here in Florida it was in the 80's

and sunny and it's crazy that on Jan 1 instead of freezing as usual -

our family (and our new pooch Simba) were swimming in the ocean and

off the boat! (but we love this type of crazy)

Here is an archive on EFAs -flax vs fish oil. One other thing I

want to add is that more is not always better -it depends what you

add more of. When you add more " EFAs " , you change the ratio of the

Omega 3 to the Omega 6 which may or may not be a good thing. Not

that it will hurt the child -but since we are all looking for what

helps the most just thought I'd add that too. If you check the

archives -some that reported the ProEFA wasn't working for example -

were also using cod liver oil together with the ProEFA. I suggested stopping

the cod liver oil and just use the ProEFA and that's

when they reported surges. Raising the Omega 3 over the Omega 6 is

needed at times. There are a few children that need the higher DHA -

most children here don't. Most do better with a higher EPA. Remember -

all that matters are formula, dosage and quality of the oils:

" Most of our experience is with one, 1.0 gram capsule of ProEFA

(Complete Omega) that contains 144 mg EPA, 99 mg DHA and 40 mg of

GLA. We know that this combination appeared to work well. There were

some other supplements used but we could not conclude anything about

them. I can only say that both EPA and DHA are important and GLA

appears to have an additional positive effect on speech.

ALA, linoleic and oleic acids in " The Total Omega " contribute very

little to the EPA, DHA, and GLA effect.

I see at least 2 possibilities that you could use if you decide to

make the transition from short-chain omega-3s in plants (flax seed

oil containing alpha-linolenic acid or ALA, C18:2n-3) to the long-

chain mixture of EPA (C20:5n-3) and DHA (C22:6n-3). These are DHA

Jr. (30 mg DHA and 20 mg EPA in a serving unit) and Coromega (350 mg

EPA and 230 mg DHA). Both of these have been anecdotally successful

in the past.

Coromega can be divided in two and taken one half in the morning the

other in the evening. If you choose this mode you will provide your

son with the equivalent EPA+DHA of 2 ProEFA capsules per day without

the GLA.

Flax seed oil or freshly ground flax seeds are an excellent source

of the essential omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid (ALA or LNA) which is

the quintessential parent member of the omega-3 family of essential

fatty acids (EFAs). The body transforms it into EPA and the EPA into

DHA.

This transformation is very inefficient (the yield is about 10%) and

is further inhibited by over consumption of omega-6 fatty acids from

most vegetable oils or certain disease states. Therefore, it is

advisable to independently consume also ready made EPA and DHA from

good quality fish of from high quality fish oil supplements. Some

recommended intakes are listed on the Introductory lecture on EFAs

that I gave at the First Conference on Therapy of Verbal Apraxia,

None of these materials present with any known side effects or

known toxicity in an otherwise healthy person. Nevertheless, we

advise every user of supplements to use them under medical

supervision. We don't know your child and we cannot provide you

with medical advice.

Thank you very much for your email. I love the book, " The LCP Solution " .

Actually, I wrote up an article with that book providing much of the

information. I often suggest the book to people. I am anxious to read your

book.

It pains me to know that children are having to deal with the system and their

answer to testing of our children. I just read a length bio on your site

concerning this very situation. Which diagnostic test do you suggest? Is it

the UNIT that is best?

As for the question about Omega 3, Borage Oil and anti-flammatory agents, you

can check out an article I have on my website (www.shalomranch.org) under

Prostaglandins, Omega and brain function.

Also, one of the things I really believe in is teaching all children how to

read. Dr. Hilde Mosse did much for the advancement of teaching children with

severe language disorders. She used a method called The Spalding Method

(www.spalding.org). I also have notes that go along with their text (The

Writing Road to Reading) on my site.
